He did say that was no excuse for what he did....sounds like responsibility and accountability to me,

I think the responsibility and accountability comment was directed at the Republican leadership that may have been warned about this previously.

To my understanding, it was kept quiet at the parents' request.

It is also of no surprise this pops up now at mid-term elections with seats to gain for everyone THREE YEARS after the incident.

Politics makes me sick, and some people who use such things as a discussion "point" to bash an entire party make me even moreso. (Considering the source, there is no question as to their level of understanding.)

Both sides are fucked up when it comes to this. I seem to recall the 1983 Page Sex scandal. Once you hit the pinnacle of power it seems the vices that are taboo seem to stack up rather quickly.

LOL.

Yeah such irony... aren't the republicans the ones screaming about taking "personal responsibility" for your actions... yet when one their own gets owned they rally around and blame everything under the sun... "oh it's because he was abused as a child..."

fucking hypocrites.

The GOP is in deep shit come Nov. I predict they're going to lose a lot of seats. With this bullshit war in Iraq, this scandle, the way they've handled domestic affairs. I can't say the Dem's would do much better, but who knows.

You don't read much outside of what you need to fuel the fire of your blind hatred, do you?

He continues to offer no excuse whatsoever for his conduct.

We won't mention the fact that the age of consent in D.C. is 16...will we?

Many of the GOP will continue to rally around Foley. Simply, if for no other reason, to salvage his seat for another republican. The value of them winning seats far out weighs principle.

There will be some criticism from the right, but not nearly as much as what they gave to Clinton for getting a blow job from an ADULT woman.

I highly doubt anyone gives a shit about Clinton's blowjob. I don't think they did THEN either so much.

It was his lie under oath to a grand jury.

and *gasp* they're trying to salvage seats for themselves?! Surely you jest! This isn't politics!

Oh, wait...

I think you're missing the point. It's not about the "politics" behind it. It's about them [the GOP] beating their chests as champoins of morality and responsibility - then when they're faced with a moral crisis they back peddle and dress down the situation to save face. Rather than just standing up and taking responsibility.

A spokesman for the White House describes the exchange as "naughty letters." Naughty letters? Now if a Democrat had been caught doing this - they'd be screaming for a trail. And once again thumping their chests as the high and mighty champoins of family values and how oh so important is it that we protect our children from predators.

If the tables were turned here, the Republicans would be screaming about morals, yet when it’s their camp that’s getting hit; they are trying to deflect it. Is it political? Of course it is. However, the republicans in office should live up to those high morals they claimed to have. If it’s found that there was actually prior knowledge of this or deeds similar to this, it could really hurt them in this election. It’s hard to campaign about your high morals when you’re showing that you consider yourself to be above those morals.

I'm sure there'll be a trial with or without anyone screaming. Perhaps it's that the GOP trusts that their people will do the right thing and they don't trust the Dems to?

Foley stood up and basically said "I screwed up...it's my fault and even though I was abused that's no excuse." I'm not sure how much more stand up you want the guy to be.

I don't believe they'd be screaming for a trial. Which is impossible considering the laws in DC concerning age of consent regardless.

Do I see a problem with it? Not really... because at 16 if I had wanted to snack on the cocks of old men, no one was going to stop me.

As far as the champions of morality subject, the fact that this is being used as ammo is the exact same thing, an attempt to claim a higher moral ground.

Both parties are guilty of it. Normally they don't see their own examples of it for their own zealous pursuit of the moral high ground above the other, block their vision.

You can claim all you want that the "GOP" try to be moral champions blah blah blah, but the Democrats do the same and those of us who don't give a fuck, can see this.

How in the world did you come up with that conclusion? How is asking the Republicans to stand by that moral ground they claimed to have an attempt to claim a higher moral ground?

I'm so surprised Marty and Finny came to the defence of another Republican scandal.

No wait, you guys are moderates with no political allegiance right?

Personally I don't think he did anything wrong, but saying this guy and his party are being accountable only after years of covering this up, now that they are caught is, completely asinine.

This has nothing to do with Clinton. This has nothing to do with some congressmen in the 1980s. Stop desperately trying to deflect this.
