Alien is/was a straight up horror movie that takes place in outer space.

You're right about Alien being a straight up horror. I can't think of any director that's excelled in so many different genres as Riddley Scott has.
You forgot Evil Dead so you're list is pointless. Of the more recent stuff, Frailty is awesome.

Evil Dead was great but it didn't make the top 10... it slid in at 11. Sorry.

Frailty was an awesome movie.
Alien and The Shining are my top two all-time though.
You were right Tikker. We suck.

Frailty was great but more of a psycho thriller.

Horror movies don't really scare me but for some reason Event Horizon gave me the willies.

The 1st hour is great, then the movie just falls apart.

I still don't like watching it...
I'd rank it as one of my top 10 Horror movies of all time. Even though I have a desire to never watch it again... yet I know I will ><

I was not at all impressed with Hellraiser, actually. Saw it with a group of friends in the theatre when it came out, and within 10 minutes the female main character had been renamed to "The Communnity Chest". Later on, when we met Pinhead, the main thing I kept wondering was "What happens if he meets 'Man With Hammer'"...
Event Horizon was just plain bad. Part of it was that the theatre had the sound cranked up unbelievably loud for that movie, to the point where it was exceedingly annoying.
Alien, The Shining and The Thing, however, I will most readily concur with. I'd put 28 Days Later in my top 10, if I had one as well.

28 Days Later wasn't really a Horror movie as most zombie movies aren't.

I thought Resident Evil was very freaky. Of course, it didn't scare me. But it did make me jump and giggle here and there.
I do get scared. But I only get scared if I am reading a good ghost story. Usually the "true" ones scare me the most.

Resident Evil was great. I thought it would suck, it did not. The second one however, is horrible.

Its a zombie movie wich would be an offshoot of the horror catagory.
