Not It! Mass. Elementary School Bans Tag

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) - Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

How very stupid. I agree, why do we have to micromanage kids life so much? There are too many people out there that need to look closer at their own lives, before they start micromanaging others.

Lets just put all the kids in their own little plastic bubble, or wrap them in bubble wrap. I like this idea.

I'm torn between whining about Marty's anti-school rant and actually thinking this is stupid.

When I was in grade 5 the school banned pogo-balls. I don't know if anyone remembers those or if it was even a fad in the US, but it's like a pogo stick but it's a rubber ball with a plastic foot rest around it.

<img src="http://deforceenterprises.com/bfs/pogo-ball.gif">

Here we go.

Anyway they banned them because one of the students, a whacked out Christian kid who didn’t take too well to his mothers over baring ways, threw it at another students face. (sidenot: this kid was like love Jesus and all that shit till he hit high school then he went WAY the other way. Was pretty funny actually.)

All this to stay it was completely stupid because if the wacky kid really wanted to hurt a kid he could just toss a chair or a book or anything else, the pogo ball wasn't the problem.

I think there was a point to all that. Well fine, the point is Marty's right.

I like those to. You know why you can't find them today? Because I broke my ankle and sued until the company went out of business. ROFL j/k of course.

For my kids, I don't allow them to play any rough sports, you know, like uno and those other games where you can get paper cuts on your fingers.

When my kids get off the bus, one of the first things I do is hug them through there plastic BiHaz suites, nothing like sound of crinkling plastic when you hug your childern.

When I was a kid we used to play red ass, not these pussy "chase games" like tag.

You and your friends would throw a tennis ball against the wall and everyone else would try and catch it before it touched the ground. If they did, you got a letter. If you dropped the tennis ball while catching it, you had to drop it and run to the wall, if someone else managed to pick up the ball and have it hit the wall before you touched it you got a letter. If you get three letters the person who gave you the last one was able to throw the tennis ball at you as hard as possible while you stood face towards the wall.

It was awesome, not sure if it would fly in Massachusetts though.

Oh boy, this thread takes me back.

we used to play a game in gym class called "War"

you'd take the blue floor mats, and set them up on their sides

you'd then use every ball from the rec room

the medicine balls were used to try and knock over the other teams blue mats

the volleyballs and the big red bouncy balls were used to try and hit the other team with (like dodge ball)

if you "killed" everyone on the other team, you won

if you knocked over all 4 of their blue mats, you won

the smaller wiffle balls, and those rubbery red/blue balls could be thrown too, but they didn't score points, they were only there to hurt the guys with the medicine balls ;)

When I first saw this thread's title, I thought they were banning it because of sexual harassment possibilities.

We played "farmer ball." It was like a cross between football and basketball and hockey. Well not really hockey except that we only played when the courts had a nice sheen of ice on them. We called it farmer ball because generally it was only the country kids that would play, all the town kids were pussies. Anyway, it was basically basketball on ice with no dribbling, no blood no foul, no close fist punching(unless fighting over whether someone was bleeding because of a foul or because they simply slipped and cracked their head open on the ground). It's amazing we all lived.

When you grow some hair on your face little boy, you can speak about "tough" in any manner.

Until then of course you can just keep being the angsty, pre-pubescent little shit you are I suppose.
