Your negative outlook on people who earn their GED as opposed to a HS diploma is quite the opposite of at least one person (me) and I'm sure many people in this "nation" also do not laugh at such a person. I'm an employer who has two applicants for a highly sought-after job. They both scored a '10' on my interview. They are equally qualified for the job and it simply comes down to education. One of them graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA, the other left 'for whatever reason' at age 16 and got their GED. Who do I hire?

Like I said, some 'equivalency graduates' get into 'life' and do well for themselves. The problem is... every school district in the area has an 'alternative' program for trouble-makers, crack-heads and other miscreants in which they can 'earn' their equivalency degree, separate from the 'normal' kids. I'm not saying that this is the average GED kid, but it's often the case. If you are going to go through life with no college degree, depending on >a< highschool diploma to get you by... cool. Good luck. But those people who think that there is no difference between a GED and the 'real' thing are blind.

And, yeah... 99% of the the people I meet who dropped out are total brain-dead losers. The ratio is a lot better for people who actually "made it" through high school. Maybe that's because I don't normally hang out with a gang of dropouts, so those that I do meet are usually pretty, well... Finawin. There is the occasional one-percenter who surprises me, and if he makes it through and actually gets an ENGINEERING degree, why... I'll eat my hat! Until then, he's lumped in with the remainder of the dropouts.

They have now moved under my tounge as well, but its all good. I have a script of codeine and some viscous lidocaine, so basically I am drugged up and numb as hell. Lidocaine is one of the worst tasting things ever, but my whole mouth goes numb, side effects are that I talk funny and drool, its pretty amusing, but at least I can't feel anything.

I am going back to the doctors Monday and if there is no change or it is worsening, I get to go onto infectious diseases :P

For now I will enjoy my sleepy narcotic induced stupor, and drool a bit!

If I may interject some fact into the whole college/high school/dropout argument, the government has some new statistics collected by the Census Bureau and the Federal Reserve Bank.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- How much is a bachelor's degree worth? About $23,000 a year, the government said in a report released Thursday.

That is the average gap in earnings between adults with bachelor's degrees and those with high school diplomas, according to data from the Census Bureau.

College graduates made an average of $51,554 in 2004, the most recent figures available, compared with $28,645 for adults with a high school diploma. High school dropouts earned an average of $19,169 and those with advanced college degrees made an average of $78,093.

"There appear to be strong incentives to get a college degree, given the gaps that we observe," said Lisa Barrow, senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

So, if you're in college and wondering about your decision. Don't.

GED+degree? Sure. I hired a PHP programmer 2 months ago who had that... he's amazing. But he actually did it... he finished school. Up til now, Finawin hasn't done ANYTHING. He's cheering about $16.50... in Boston... omg, seriously.

I don't laugh at them, I just don't take them as seriously as someone who finished high school. I look at every possible angle when it comes to the GED and I can't see it as anything other than the 'easy' way out. Not saying they suck, but I don't feel they are generally as qualified to handle things as well as someone who graduated. There's different circumstances out there, but like Vonk said, that's what 99% of the class of GED represent. Maybe you're a super educated, highly intelligent goal oriented person. If that's the case then pat yourself on the back for being in the 1 percentile.

honestly...high school is just preschool for college. It isn't really necessary as all the classes you take in high school are retaught in your first year of college. But it is good to have a heads up.

GED and HS diploma aren't any different. The only difference is, someone with a diploma had more patience than the person with a GED.

I dropped out at 16...got my GED at 19..that is after I had a child for years already...then I began classes and I got all A's and B's until the classes got a little complicated.

What one person can do, another can do. GED and HS diploma are no different in the grand scheme of things.

Well, it could be because I am doing great in college and I dropped out years before I actually decided to get my GED. It could also be because I have heard from a few different professors that k-12 is basically a waste of time. It could also be because it is true.

I can't believe any professor would say K-12 is a waste of time. That's when your foundation is created. College simply builds on the foundation. It's not a replacement for what has come before.

For those of you who did dropout and are thinking of (in Fin's case) or have already (in Garg's case) gone back to school to get a college degree, I think that's great. I think you're going to be fighting an uphill battle, but stay on track b/c you'll definitely be better off for it. Good luck!

I am not saying everyone should drop out. I said k-12 is like preschool for college. It WILL prepare you and make college easier. But if you have already dropped out. Don't fear, the GED will get you into college then you will relearn the important stuff in your first and second semesters.

i'm proud of my GED, i even got a letter from the president when i completed it in the 99% haha.

then i went to college, and was like WOAH ITS HIGHSCHOOL VERSION 2.0 fuck this. dropped outta college. then i found out you can actually go places with the right work ethic and show a desire to learn infront of the right people.

i agree though, the GED is totally the "easy way" at least at that very moment. makes shit a little more difficult once youre not 19 anymore, and need to try to find a decent job. i wish i would have put my punkass attitude aside for a few years and just finished highschool, and went through college. oh well. i'm not happy unless i'm miserable, and the GED set me up to be miserable for the rest of my days

I am NOT in Boston, you fucking moron. That is a major point to clear up here. I would barely be able to afford living in Boston at all because that place is fucking ridiculous on everything. (The McDonalds in Boston don't have $1 menus for example)
