the car we just got (used) has that smell, that old car smell. or moldy, mildewy...whatever that smell is, you know the one. how do you get it out??

febreeze didn't work. I don't want to go through all the things that cost money to figure it out. should I just get the entire inside detailed, or will it matter? should I get something someone knows about.. and they know that it works..?

halp!

Take the seats out and shampoo the carpets. It will take a while, but you'll be glad you did it.

Smoke a fat "J" in the car to cover up the smell.

Good idea. Probably will be more convenient if I'm driving then or we could just be parked in your driveway.

I don't know what you are smoking but if I burn one in my car, it stinks for weeks.

Mindias suggestion is the sure bet. Shampoo the seats as well. Or take it to a detailer and maybe you can smile cute and get a garauntee they'll get the smell out.

Hmm maybe try a sprinkling some baking soda or leave a box or two opened in the car like you would a refridgetor.

most detailers will do a good job for under 40.00. also there are packets you can buy the lok so much like a purple ball of jello in a bag. Anywho. these are thrown under your seat. last detail i went to had them and they chucked it under my seat. fucking car still smells like bayberry.

Why the hell would you ever buy a used car that smells like it's been soaking in water?

Agree with Mindia. Either you can do that or take it and have it fully detailed. They can shampoo the carpets and seats.

Most likely the smell isn't from the carpet itself but the insulation under it, then you're f-d. :(

A decent detailing will probably cost you around 150.00. We had our truck detailed (before we sold it) and it really came out nice.

try sprinkling some of that sceneted baking soda made for carpets throughout your car carpet and let it settle in there for a while...baking soda will eat bad odors anywhere...and there is actually better stuff out there that kills the germs that cause stench rather than trying to mask them with sticky water like febreeze does.

And make sure you check the rubber weatherstripping around all the doors.

The car has clearly been wet on the inside before. Either it was flood damaged, or it has a leak somewhere. Weatherstripping usually the culprit and easy enough to replace.

Oh yeah make sure you check the trunk too.

Also, I had an old car that the heater core started leaking coolant/water all over the floorboards. That could be an issue too depending.

Make sure there's not a waterlogged corpse stuffed in the trunk with seaweed and stuff on it.

hehe

shampooed the carpets and have some nice smelling rock bags and a tacky one hanging from the mirror. it's smelling much better...and am going to have someone look at the sunroof and check the weatherstripping.

not sure about how it's like that, other than the owners have just had accidents over the years, leaving the sunroof open, etc...they have dogs...it's been their family car since they bought it brand new. we're the proud new owners for $900-makes me happy. it's a good car for what we paid.
