Computer being fucking retarded.

Postby Jei » Fri Jun 11, 2004 6:22 pm

My computer is acting up and I don't know why. Every 2 minutes I get a popup telling me that i have unsafely removed a device on my computer and that it could cause harm to it. It's really fucking annoying when i'm playing a game and I get that crap every 30 seconds. Also, nothing responds at all no matter what I click on. It takes 10 minutes literally for IE to load a webpage, and when I restart my computer, it takes at least 30 minutes (not exaggerating) to boot up. I ran Norton and my spyware junk and I have no virus or anything. I ran the device manager, and it said both of the said "unplugged devices" were working properly. Also went to windows update and updated all of that. WHAT ELSE COULD BE WRONG :[ I have Windows 2000 pro. And the devices that the popups are for are my CD Rewrite and something else relating to my CD drive. I have done nothing to it at all recently that would hinder it's ability to run. Anyway, please help.

Slow boot up times could be slow hardware OR a drive with a high frag %(ie 50%+).

Well, use the ol' sneakerNet option and upgrade to WinXP Pro or Home, update that all the way.

Or, Defrag and clean out your hard drive. You have enough space for your virtual memory settings? At least 2 gigs for the pagefile/cache file has to be there for it to work properly.

Your RAM chips in there seated completely?
Your cooling fan keeping your cpu cool enough? You have a dust problem?
You may have an insect problem inside your power supply.

Do a piece by piece checkout of your rig's physical equipment, then your software.

Good luck,
