MLK Memorial

Postby Ginzburgh » Mon Nov 13, 2006 12:13 pm

New 100 million dollar MLK memorial breaks ground.

Good or bad?

While I think he was a great guy and deserving of a memorial...100 million is a ton of money.

Your wish is my command Ginz!

Bad. That's 100 million dollars. We all already know who he is and how he was pretty cool so why do we need a memorial?

Before making a good or bad determination I'd first want to know where the money came from.

Washington DC. They are using four acres of the mall area.

It could probably be constructed by a private company for an eighth of the cost.

4 acres? 100 million?

A waste....

Well now I don't feel as bad, from the CNN article:

Backers have raised more than $65 million, according to The Associated Press. Most of the funding has come from corporate donors including Tommy Hilfiger and General Motors

NM I was wrong. There was a rumor a long time ago that Tommy Hilfiger said some racist shit somewhere back in the day. It's false though so nevermind.

The costs and land seem to be excessive, but if the excess is a result of private donations by people and or businesses that support a great man, and not appropriation of taxpayer money by a few individuals writing checks on someone else's account sorta speak, I have no issue with it.

There's a Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in every major city in the U.S. Isn't that enough?

There is a living memorial dedicated MLK Jr. in Atlanta named The King Center.
