IMHO Everquest has been dead. They should have realized that no matter how many more expansions they put into the game, people were still going to quit, and stopped with SoV (the last good expansion).

Everquest has gone from a great game loaded with friends, good times, fun quests, decent raiding content... to hoards of clueless ebayers, mad rushes to get 'uber' as quickly as possible, empty zones, and broken/incomplete expansions.

It's gotten to big and to loaded down with bullshit. There's a point when enough is enough... something Sony needed to accept long ago.

sony is still making money off EQ, while a lot of people have quit, they could probably still be making money even if 90% of the people playing now quit

They HAVE to care. Reputation and word of mouth are critical in growth industries.
If you don't think that online games are a growth industry, then you are extremely misguided.
Sony have already followed theory by diversifying (Planetside and SW:G)
Even there reasons behind diversification are being followed;

Conditions for diversifying:
- No other growth opportunities can be established with exisiting products or markets
- The firm has unstable sales or profits because it operates in markets that are characterized by unstable environments
- The firm wishes to capitalize on a core competence
Guiltinan, Paul, and Madden (1997) Marketing Management: Strategies and Programs, 6th ed. McGraw-Hill.

They have already announced at least three more expansions for EQ. This is not divestment, so they are not cutting their costs and using EQ for a cash cow. Market share will drop dramatically with the arrival of World of Warcraft, and that will force Sony to change their tactics to retain customers.

I will watch it with interest.

ITS NOT 1 PERSON GOING FROM GUILD TO GUILD, GETTING 1 FLAG OR 2 FLAGS AND THEN MOVING TO ANOTHER GUILD TRYING TO BUMB SOME MORE..... ANYONE WHO DOES THIS WELL GUESS YOU WILL BE STUCK IN BOT FOREVER.....

We had 72+ for quite a few Coir / Rathe raids back in PoP.

Doesn't necessarily make it easier, sometimes less is more.

Can't fault people for doing what the game allows.

Agree. Nothing wrong with having 72+. Im sure many of them were boxed toons. If they used 2 raids of 72....well, that would be a bit different.
