College

So like, I graduated from high school last June and started Fall Quarter at a local community college a couple months ago. I have finals this week which are probably gonna be easy, but really retarded.

These community college teachers are some of the biggest retards I've ever met in my life. They don't grade homework, they just check if its turned in and give an A. They show up late to classes. And above all, if you have different ideas on a subject, they mark you down on assignments, that is, if they grade them.

In closing: Fuck community colleges. I can't wait to transfer to the UW.

It won't be any different.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Actually, it will be, most likely. Especially if by UW you mean University of Washington, which is an excellent school.

Yes, you will still encoutner retarded professors, but you'll also run into good ones, that actually expect you to LEARN something.

your options are a little more open maybe not for all classes but you can choose your professors a little more wisely at the university

What you get from college is what you put in, the easy grading will bite you in the ass if you don't do the work later on. It isn't highschool, classes are chained together and you use what you've learned from 1a, and apply that to the info of 1b, 1c, etc.

I actually found that my community college professors were much better than my university professors but also my community college was one of the top ranked ones.

And upper division classes are whole new kettles of fish. They're designed only for juniors and seniors, they assume you already know how to study and keep up with classwork, and they often require significant background knowledge from lower division courses. Basically, they give assignments & pace the class as if you were going to spend at least 2 hours out of class for every hour you spend in class. That's why 12 credits is enough to be a "full time" student. Some classes may well require significantly more work than that, depending on the class. Minimum lengths of assignments often rises dramatically too. Where in lower division, you might have a 5-10 page paper on something, by upper division, you're writing 20-30 pages.

Also, because there's a limited range of professors in your major, you'll get to know them better than probably any teacher you've had before, and you'll work with them much more closely, especially the closer you get to graduation, if you have any sort of senior thesis or senior project.

that's why it's good to involve yourself in the program once you decide a major, and really get to know everybody etc..

Another reason is that invariably in a lot of upper division classes, especially in sciences & engeineering, you WILL have to do group projects as part of the class. Frequently these will be 3-4 person teams, and you'll have most of the semester to work on the project, but it will end up being worth anywhere up to oh, I've seen projects determine half your grade.

If you have friends and know the competant people who are in your class, you can make a top-notch team, and know you're not gonna have some jackass who never does any work, and just leans on everyone else to do the project for him.

Well, the biggest issue for me is my english class. I got into 105 right off the bat which is expected since I was in AP English classes in High School.

What bugs the hell out of me though is that my high school teacher did Hamlet with us, and opened us up to the hundreds of ways that different people interpret the play. We were encouraged to take on our own meaning of the play and make something out of it.

In my college class, its the teacher's interpretation. Period. Anything else is completely wrong, even if the text supports it.

I guess my high school teacher was too good and spoiled learning for me.

This is the real shit man, that is how it is. You will find professors who grade extremely liberal towards their own views, thus if you write a conservative paper, your grade might suffer. It's a game, just play the cards right.

If it's not an applied science, take the knowledge with a grain of salt and just pass your classes. None of that shit will matter when you take your degree into the real world. College is all about networking, socialization, making connects, fattening your resume and just plain enjoying yourself.
