US manufacturers in dire need for skilled workers

Post by Phlegm »

Not all US manufacturing jobs are outsourced to other countries. There are a deperate need for skill workers.

Much has been made of the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs in the USA in recent years. But manufacturers, regardless of size, specialty or location, across the USA are reporting a dire shortage of skilled workers: people such as welders, electricians or machinists with a craft that goes beyond pushing buttons or stacking boxes but does not require a degree.

In a survey of 800 manufacturers conducted by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) last year, more than 80% said they were experiencing a shortage of skilled workers. In October, manufacturers surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said "finding qualified workers" was their biggest business problem.

Exactly. Raising a family on 14 dollars an hour isn't easy. Especially in this so called great economy.

My dad's an electrictian and was unemployed for nearly a year because of the stupid Union and their "wait list" to be put on jobs.

In the downtime, he had to take a job at the airport helping people bring in their luggage for $5.15/hour plus the rare tip. I hope this means his job will be secure for a number of years yet, because it's worrisome when there's not enough work to go around.

The US has been becoming more and more and more a service (non corporal) based country due to many factors over the years.

Get Minrott here stat.

Electricians / Carpenters / Plumbers... this does not apply to you near so as much as people who can actually create.

Primarily, Machinists. A man sufficiently skilled in millwork, not CNC will have a great deal of success and opportunities over the course of his lifetime in this country.

probably depends a lot on where you live, but most of the skilled tradesman i know are well above the 14 an hour range. 6 figures in not uncommon anymore.

people in trades not making a lot of money has more to do with shit for brains than it does opportunity.

Our welders and fabricators pull in 17 or 18 an hour, and the machinist we have makes about 20 or 21 an hour i believe. Theres other machinery shops in the area like us i hear pay their machinists up to 25 an hour, which I wouldnt complain about

If houses were only about a hundred grand, then $25/hr. would be sufficient to raise a family. With real estate prices being what they are, it takes 2 incomes to make it and live comfortably. In the end, the kids suffer, because they have to go to daycare while mommy and daddy are working... and daycare-raised kids are prone to many types of serious problems.

Are you serious? You've never heard of the thousands of daycare children nationwide who are having to take Ritalin to keep them "normal?" It's a big problem.

Here, read some of these posts:

Well, yes, I was serious actually which is why I asked. I wanted to know where the information came from and to see some actual statistics. Yes, there are bad day care facilities unfortunately and yes, children are more likely to contract illnesses by going to them. As far as getting sick, well....that will happen plenty if not now, then when they enter grade school.

My questions are, and they are rhetorical for the most part, are the parents who have so many problems with their children's behavior actively involved in how their kids are taken care of in their absence? Do they have a partnership with that caregiver or center's employees in making sure those caregivers are following their wishes? Do they discipline their children at home even though they may feel guilty for sending them off to day care so they can make a decent wage?

Children misbehave, they get wound up, and if the adults in their lives cannot accept these things and want their children complacent all the time...sure, put them on Ritalin or what-not. I'm not saying that there aren't children out there that really do have ADHD or ADD but the number of true cases are not nearly as many as there are children on the medication for it.

Personally, if I could stay home to take care of my children I would. No one can do a better job raising your children than you, in most cases. However, I'm a single mom so there is no choice in the matter.

...bah...sorry for the thread hijack and the novel~going back to work now...
