Question for you people who work in offices

Postby Dylan » Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:26 pm

I get the feeling none of you who work in office jobs actually do anything but read NT and play games all day, or at least do it for a large portion of your day.

So, my question is, how do those office jobs monitor how much work you're actually doing? Or do they just set a certain amount of work that needs to be done and once you're done with the monthly project you come in and fuck around for the rest of the time?

Our system sucks so basically i can usually post and work at the same time. Things are running in the background when I post. Other days I have 240248942 meetings to go to where absolutely nothing gets solved. It's amusing.

for my job, i have a production sheet where i keep track of page counts and other such things. there's a targeted amount that we're supposed to shoot for each month, but certain factors (amount of time the interns are in the office--which lessens the workflow for the others in my dept, dead weeks, weird close schedules, etc.) that allow for more or less work to be done. plus there's side projects, additional responsibilities, etc. that tie up our time but aren't accounted for via production forms. but yeah, they keep track of us. it just so happens that my job isn't exactly all that time consuming for anyone with half a brain, so i have some leftover time to burn.

every now and then throughout the day I'll drink a cup of coffee and eat a cake and stop in and laugh at people for a few minutes, then its back to work. Some days I cant stop in at all, others are a little less intense. Theres no one that can moniter me, but if I dont get the work done invoices wont go out, quotes wont get done, or whatever I need done that day. No slaps on the wrist from an overpaid corporate prick on a powertrip if the work doesnt get done, it just doesnt get done and eventually our company would fail

with auto-cad it takes my boss 4 days to do what i can do in 6 hours, so i usually finish whatever design job needs taken care of real fast, sit on it for a week, consult him regarding health codes etc., then ship it off. i'm also in charge of the company website and our catalog has over 600 items on it, and i already finished all of that but it can always use some "polishing"

but yeah basically alot of my time is spent trying to look busy and leaving early so i can do bjj/judo

and as far as computer monitoring it's a small-ish company and they really don't give a shit what i'm looking at

semi true here too

A lot of what I do involves collecting a bunch of data, the processing via stupidly large and overly complicated parsing algorhythms

ie

push go, then wait for 2-3 hours to finish

basically, there's a lot of waiting on other people to get stuff done, then a big rush to get my shit done , etc etc

I'm a programmer. I constantly wait for my application to deploy to a mobile device. While that is occuring I read NT / digg.

QFT!

Pretty much have a set things i need to get done each week. When i get em done, i then slaxor off. I make up what i need to do each week, i dont have someone thats really above me.

Even when i am doing work, i usually have NT open. Stop in and post when i can, wich has been inflated by how slow we are last couple of weeks.

I work in an office all day. I have time in between compiles and such to post on the boards and browse around.

They monitor by the amount of time tracked against my projects. I don't have to work from the office, I can also work from home which I do for part of my time. I'll probably work from home a little next week so I can get stuff done without people popping up at my desk to ask me questions.
