Minimum Wage hike

Postby Phlegm » Wed Jan 10, 2007 9:11 pm

Good news for some of you. The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour. The bill would raise the wage floor in three steps. It would go to $5.85 an hour 60 days after signed into law by the president, to $6.55 a year later and to $7.25 a year after that.

That's still not enough money, and it shouldn't take them 2 years to raise it that minimally. What a joke.

Depends on where you live. Automobile insurance is astronomical in California, especially for teens.

No fucking shit. I pay wayy too much money right now on insurance, literally over 350 dollars a month (1 truck one car, and in the future one bike) for insurance. I'm not a teen, either. It really does suck ass to see so much damned money go to the extremely unlikely of events.

It'd be ideal if any job that offers a full time position paid a wage that allows the person to live independantly in whatever area the job is located (meaning income >= average local living expenses). Keep the cheapo jobs part time for kids, np. Probably wouldn't work though.

Not going to impact CA anyway, Mindia. Our minimum wage is already higher than the federal one: 7.50 right now, and it goes to 8.00 in january of '08. As for how long the phase in takes, that's actually a nod to the conservatives, the ones who are whining that business will never be able to afford to pay their employees more, even though historically, adjusted for inflation, they haven't payed them LESS since the 1930s, I believe it was. I am quite sure the extreme liberals would love to make it an immediate increase, and set it even higher.

Yeah, business people who claim they cannot afford to pay their employees more are FULL OF SHIT. What it means to many small business owners is that they will only make $150k/yr. instead of $175k/yr. Boo friggin hoo.

good thing cars are a luxury for a teenager then, and not a life necessity

seriously, boofuckinghoo

arguing that minimum wage is too low because insurance premiums for driving in cali are too high for teenagers is beyond retarded

I'm interested to see if the wage hike will cause more inflation than it's worth, with all the business owners whining about having to raise prices to maintain the "little" profit that they are getting.

Wal Mart for the win!

Wall mart and target really aren't affected by the hikes as most pay more than that for starting employees. at least around here starting for either of those places just to be a cashier or someone working on the floor is 8 - 9 a hour, go more out to the nice part s of baltimore county closer to 10.00

If you think any company will absorb an increase in minimum wages you are crazy. All they'll do is raise their prices.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

I hate when they increase the minimum wage, it devalues our jobs that we actually had to put some work into getting. imo it should stay as low as possible since it isnt meant to actually make a living on.

You don't know America's urban layout then. A lot of people don't live within walking distance of places to work, and on top of that, many families have both their mother and father working so they can't get a ride from mommy or daddy, and further, a lot of people don't live near a bus line. Reasonable conclusion: Get a car. But insurance is incredibly high here in California due in large part to a teen's (in general) dangerous driving habits. The other factor is big insurance corporation greed.

$3.35/hr. was the California minimum wage in 1983-84. I got my driver's license in 1982, and got my first job in 1983.

Minimum wage here in Marin county is like 12 bucks an hour I swear.

Either way, minimum wage for teens is fine. The first hour of minimum wage covers bus fare both ways np.
