LOTRO beta

Post by Reynaldo »

Anyone want in the latest beta? I just got an email for the next one but I'm resigned to the fact I won't be playing it so if anyone can make use, feel free to post or PM me.

Ditto
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Not that I have anything against the game, but you'd think companies would learn that trying to be copies of other games is a Bad Idea. WOW is already much better at being WOW than your game will ever be. Why would you get hundreds of thousands of people flocking to your game when it offers little but cosmetic differences?

That's funny, given WOW is a Diku/EQ clone just set in the Warcraft universe.

There's nothing wrong with copying, but one needs to improve on what they are copying. WOW copied EQ, but made many improvements and understands KISMIF.

LOTR did a half ass job copying EQ, WOW and AC, IMO.

That's my point, which you apparently missed. Taking elements from other things is fine. But being a DIRECT UNCHANGED copy, save for cosmetic details is folly, as the game you're salvishly copying is better at being itself than you ever will be. So, to stand out, you need to change a lot more than just cosmetics.

WOW, as you admit yourself, while it did borrow from EQ/DIKU, did indeed change significant aspects of the game play and player experience. Thus, they were no longer a direct imitator.

If LOTRO is attempting to be a direct imitator of WOW, they will fail. If they borrow some ideas, and at the same time incorporate enough innovations to differentiate themselves from WOW, they have a chance. It sounds from the posts here, though, that they went with option 1, rather than option 2.

They went with Option 3. Make a boring MMO AC Clone and add WOW functionality to it.

WOW is good because of the attention to detail. LOTRO isn't due to the inverse.

Ironically, Vanguard is now a very strong game, and offers much that WOW does not, and really has morphed into a good in depth game. Much deeper than the fluff games out there.
