I don't really see a problem with this. I guess that if I had a loved one and I knew that they may die at any time while over there, I would possibly urge them to do this if they wanted kids at some point but had not yet had any.

I have a small issue with it being the dead soldiers parents that suddenly decided they wanted to be grandparents now their kid is dead. And finding a surrogate mother is just plain creepy.

If the soldier has made arrangements for it to be done beforehand, that's one thing but this smacks of not being able to let go.
