guys i'm excited

Postby brinstar » Sun Feb 04, 2007 1:39 am

i had a big windfall recently (cashed in my vested retirement account from my old job) and after completely paying off my credit card, making some much-needed car repairs, and buying some new shoes, i've decided to sink the rest of it into getting the rest of the gear i need to put together a home recording studio

stuff i already had:

cubase SX
1x aardvark q10 direct pro I/O box
2x shure sm57 instrument mic
1x shure sm58 vocal mic
a full band's worth of rock instruments

stuff i got within the last week:

1x aardvark q10 direct pro I/O box (to be slaved to the first one, giving a total of 16 simultaneous mic inputs)
1x shure drum mic kit, containing
  • 1x shure b52 kick drum mic
  • 3x shure sm57
  • 3x clips and rim-mount claws

1x matched pair of oktava mk012 small condenser mics
some cables

stuff i still need to figure out:

a serious large diaphragm condenser mic for vocals, with pop filter
mic stands
good sound isolation
headphone mixer
perhaps a presonus bluetube preamp or two
maybe some better monitor speakers

long term stuff:

a dedicated PC just for this will need to be built at some point
a permanent place for this whole rig

very exciting!

so like, do you play all the instruments yourself at the same time like that guy who ties symbols to the inside of his knees and has a headpiece with a harmonica or you putting a band together?

Is this for your own personal band? Or do you just aspire to produce music? Or both?

Either way, it's pretty awesome. Congrats.

A friend of ours has a recording studio in his basement. He cuts demo disks for bands all the time.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

my primary instrument is the drums, although i can fake my way through guitar most of the time and i can sing a pretty good backing vocal. currently the guys i play with are on hiatus, because one of them is still finishing up his master's and another just had his first kid a couple months ago.

the idea is to put together this studio and use it for myself* and my bandmates until i'm confident enough to cut demos for local acts. if that turns out to be at all profitable/successful, i'll consider taking out a small business loan and doing it for real-- but for now, baby steps :)

*lol eziekial not quite, but what a funny mental image! i CAN do it all by myself, i just have to add one instrument at a time until everything's done. it's very exhausting and tedious but loads of fun nonetheless

Congrats Brinstar!

I mess around a bit with guitar / bass (picture in my album)..nothing great. I currently rock an old school tascam (4 track), mic'd with a ghetto fabulous radio shack mic.

Any recommendations for a digital 8 track and decent mic for the bass / guitar. I'm not looking for high end quality, just a decent sound for around $800 total. I know shit about recording.
