I'd really consider waiting about 6 months for this game to be a bit more polished. It is an ok game, but was released early. Later this year I bet it's a very good game.

Get WOW BC or EQ2 for now.. Get Vanguard later in 07

I'm burned out on the WoW thing. I may get BC down the road. I have EQ2 EoF and really like it. I was in Martrae / Kahar's guild for like 5 minutes but then some RL co-workers talked me into moving to another server and guilding up. So.. I'm currently going strong on EQ2 but this Vanguard shit is intriguing.

Why I want to play a game that will most likely kick my ass because I don't have the time to put into it, I don't know. I blame my parents.

Another question would be why would you wait to buy it if you have any intention of playing it. In 6 months, unless a new server opens, you're just going to be stuck in newbie zones with all the level 50 player's twinks. Might as well get in now and at least stay with the curve to an extent.

No clue yet. I havnt seen many people over lvl 10 yet, and the average level is about level 6. So i dont think there is any way to say for certain yet. From what i understand though in some reading i have done, soloing is possible in later levels, just quicker via groups.

OK I bought the game. Is there a huge patch to DL and install after the initial install?

Not really, i believe my download on a cable modem was 10 min ish i think. Before you do anything though, what is your graphics card. That is causing the biggest uproar about the game so far.

Not yet, but I plan on buying it the first part of March. My machine is less than capable right now (p4 3.0, 7600gt, 1gb ram), but I'm hoping another gb of ram will at least let me do single group stuff on optimized settings.

Plus the wife would slaughter me if I got a new game and RAM right after buying a new TV.

Actually you can run VG right now Rey, with your system. Mine is less than that, and after my new video card it actually runs surprisingly well. Albeit, i have the settings on low, but has minimal lag now.

I have an overclocked 7900 GT. If Vanguard won't run with that, I'm taking it back!

I am having a blast playing this. It actually is the closest MMoRPG to the original everquest in "feel" that i have played so far.

I just realize that i sound like a big fan boi.

Had an interesting bug last night though, loaded to character select screen, and when i hit play, i twould boot me right back to character select. Apparently lots are having this same problem.

If you buy it, be prepared to go through some bugs. I read the tech forums and there are tons of whiny bitchy idiots on there.

There was an article on VG in the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/07/arts/ ... 2&ref=arts

Its closing:
The general reaction to Vanguard has been mixed. Almost no one in the industry or online seems to think that it will overtake World of Warcraft any time soon, not least because the game seems to have glitches and crash occasionally for most users. But the vitriol of just a couple of months ago, when gamers found the test versions almost unplayable, has given way to grudging respect that Sigil pulled together a product worthy of its heritage. Both Mr. McQuaid and Sony acknowledge that Vanguard is still rough around the edges and that they pushed it out the door basically because the money ran out.

“Microsoft had wanted to launch this thing in July of 2006,” Mr. Smedley said. “We felt like the game needed more time, and we have given it more time, but at some point enough is enough, and we have to ship the game and start generating revenue.”

Mr. McQuaid’s view is that “I’d love to be a billionaire and fund it all myself and take more time, but all I can do is make the best game I can at launch and get the message out that it isn’t as polished as WOW but it also has a lot more depth and a lot more freedom.”

In the end he may have good cause to be upbeat. “In some ways this is just the beginning of a long journey,” Mr. McQuaid said. “People ask me, ‘Are you launching a finished game?’ And the answer is no, we’re launching a game that is good enough to launch, but it’s not finished. And that’s why I love these games: because they should never be finished.”

At least they're admitting the game is not complete and was rushed to launch. Unlike Luclin...

Well, I'm only lvl 10 but this game feels a lot more like EQ2 to me than EQ2 does! I have been having a great time BUT it's really buggy. Like, a bug, graphic glitch, framerate plunge, etc every few minutes. It's a great start though. I'm having a lot of fun. The content is laid out well, the quests and landscape are interesting, the Diplomacy card game thing is great! The engine needs work though. EQ2 runs really well on my laptop and looks better IMO than Vanguard does and Vanguard runs at about 1/2 the framerate. Hopefully they'll concentrate on optimizing the engine.

i was thinking of picking up vanguard, but i think i'm pretty much done with the mmo scene for a while

at least until a true next gen game comes out, rather than an EQ/wow clone

I've been saying that when I'm done with this character in WoW, I'm done with the MMO thing forever / atleast a long time. I wanted to play Vanguard over TBC sooo bad, but the shit has been delayed so much and my comp is under par for it so I've brushed it aside for now.

Every one thats been playing it has been saying great things about it though. In a month or so I might pick up a new graphics card and play the game "casually". You know, just run around and explore, not concentrate on level grinding or server competition...

Not sure. Even at level 12, most of the quests I am getting now are for groups.
