Why do doctors go to school for 8 years to suck?

Postby Harrison » Thu Feb 15, 2007 2:58 am

Ok, so I have been in some severe fucking pain for about a month now.

I haven't been to work in two weeks because I don't trust myself to hold anything dangerous in the condition I'm in.

So far the doctors are clueless, again. This happened two years ago, and it's pretty fucking aggravating to say the least.

Just ranting, so far they've just narrowed down what it ISN'T....which doesn't really help me. I'm just fucking frustrated.

I was in the same boat a while back. The doctors tested for everything including spiral meningitis. Talk about pain! And the spinal headaches from the ait leaking into my spine weren't all that fun, either. After 3 months they found out what it was. Some doctors are pretty dumb for all the education they have.

Suppose that means you should start posting about how thankful you are you don't have any of those things they tested you for instead of posting in anger and blaming education and experience for not being able to solve your problem.

Speaking of not knowing what's wrong with you, what happened with Adivina and her mouthrot thing?

Also, I hope you guys find a solution to whatever is ailing you soon. I work in a physician recruiting office, and one thing I've noticed is that some doctors are dumb. I honestly don't know how some of these guys get their MD/DO. In addition to getting CVs in riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, we hear about all their dumb life decisions, too. We hear a ton of crazy stories, which frankly, scare me. Doctors who have had their nurses try to poison them, doctors who steal blood from the bloodbank to pass drug tests (that's one of the scarier ones). One doctor flew across the country to Atlanta when his wife left him for her pilates instructor because he didn't know anyone else to turn to except his recruiter. However, I guess my sampling is skewed, because if a doctor has clean malpractice and a good head on his shoulders, he wouldn't have to turn to a recruiter to find him a job, so what we're left with is a bunch of scumbags and a couple of good ones.

Unfortunately, I don't have that positive of an outlook. Being in pain has pretty much just made me a prick over the weeks.

Last year they told me it was heartburn. Yes, crushing chest pains that drop me to the floor is definitely heartburn. FUCKING HEARTBURN

Harrison, there is so much to learn to be a doctor, thats why most doctors choose a specialty. Maybe what is crushing chest pains to you is a mild annoyance to somoene else. Everyone's pain threshhold is different. Just be patient and go and get a second opinion.

I've had heartburn that's knocked me to the floor a couple times.. like Kizzy said, everyone's pain threshold is different and I mean.. if they're not seeing anything physical and they can only go by what you tell them, there's only so much they can diagnose.

It's frustrating as hell that the doctors can't figure out what's wrong with my digestive system after 20 years of testing, but that's just what happens sometimes

Harrison, I have chronic heartburn too. I have acid reflux, and I was taking a prescription medication for it, and I hardly have any more problems with it now. You can also take Prilosec a couple times a week too, which should get in under control.

If you have intense chest pain, it's probably due to stress. You might want to take an ETT (treadmill test) just to make sure your heart and arteries are in good shape. I did that last year and it gave me peace of mind knowing everything was ok.

Actually, Harri, you sound just like my brother. As it turns out, he's had acid reflux for years and never knew it, and developed an esophageal ulcer that, when his reflux would act up, sent him crashing to the floor in agonizing pain. He described it as what felt like intense pressure in his chest accompanied by ripping, searing pain. He had to take off work several times because of it.

He has been taking Prilosec OTC for a few months now, and hasn't had another flare up since it kicked in.

Definitely go get a second opinion. The medical world, just like everywhere else, is full of incompetent morons, but eventually, you find someone that actually gives a damn and knows their shit.

I also recommend Prilosec. I take it every morning, and it has worked wonders for my heartburn.

I have been through the ringer with doctors since July. I started getting painful pressure in my right ear. I can hardly hear out of that ear now, have crippling headaches and have to wiggle my jaw constantly all day to get the pressure in my ear to ease up a bit. I've been to 2 gen practice doctors, 2 ENT specialists and now have an appointment with a TMJ specialist to try and figure out what the fuck is wrong with me. The last ENT I saw said basically that there was nothing he could do for me and I'd have to live with it. I spent 2.25 hours in a MRI torpedo and when I went back to consult with the doc he said, "Well, the results came up negative for anything in your left ear." I was like "ugh... it's my RIGHT EAR that's fucked up!". He then said... "oh, well they would have checked both ears, you are fine." In 5 doctor visits I have honestly spent no more than a total of 20 minutes speaking to an actual doctor. Once the docs come in, it's a 3 minute consultation and they prescribe some med they are getting a kick back from Pfizer for and sent me on my way.

Fuck that.

I was on prilosec for years before it went OTC, it doesn't do squat.

I am convinced it is a peptic ulcer coupled with a hiatal hernia. If I find out that's what it is and they've been ignoring my opinion all this time, I will be more pissed off.

That one's already been exhausted, rediagnose please!

If you had a positive outlook you might perceive things differently. I do not doubt you're in pain and hope you feel better soon.
