problems accessing work VPN

I can't VPN into work from either of my home computers. I can from my work laptop from home which I think rules out my router. I am not using Windows Firewall, and I tried disabling Norton-anti virus. The only difference between my home computers and my work laptop, I think, is that my home computers use Windows XP Home on one and Windows Media Edition on the other. My work laptop uses XP Professional.

Anyone have any suggestions for things to try?

PPTP connection or do you have an ipsec client of some sort?

Not sure what all that means. I have a cable modem connected to a Linksys Router. How do I check the things you're asking?

How are you trying to access your work network? Did you have to install a software package or did you just create a VPN connection through the XP wizard?

The latter. I just use the XP wizard to create a VPN connection.

do you have to join a domain? it would explain xp pro working and not the others

I don't think so. I just looked in the properties of the VPN connection shortcut on my work laptop, and I don't see anything like that. What would I look for?

ps, which linksys router do you have?

some of the routers themselves can be VPN endpoints (ie you setu the vpn on the router, and any or all of your pc's can see work)

I'll have to check when I get home, but it's a really recent one. I replaced my 6 year old router this summer with a new wired one. It has current firmware, and I noticed it has a lot of options for various things.

Would setting it up through the router get me around the XP Home issues? Is it pretty easy to do?

it's exactly the same as if you'd set it up on 1 machine, except everything on your network could have access

first things first, find out what router you even have. that'll go a long way in even determining if it's viable

My router is Linksys Broadband Firewall Router with 4-port switch / VPN endpoint, Model BEFSX41

The error I receive is (and note that this error is not received from my work laptop):
Error 651: The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.

BEFSX41 is actually a decent VPN router
(i have one actually)

ps, it's not very modern at all

that being said, make sure you've got firmware 1.45.7 loaded on it (it's be FAR the most stable)

Okay, I currently have firmware 1.52.9. So the first step, before following the suggetions in your link, is to move back to 1.45.7, right?

not necessarily

1.52.9 isn't bad

it's one of the 2 or 3 more stable versions
I'd definitely go ahead and set it up with that version loaded, and then if you run into issues down the road, try 1.45.7

It turns out that it was Norton after all. At Tossica's suggestion, I did a complete uninstall, and that fixed the problem.
