Got fired

Postby Eziekial » Sat Mar 10, 2007 3:13 pm

yesterday. No real reason but it wasn't a huge surprise. Basically, the boss didn't like how I did things. Anyway, life goes on but I was curious since this is the first time I've been forced into unemployment, what I should do. Part of me is angry and wants to fuck with them (file for discrimination etc.) but another part says to just let it go and forget about it.

Any ideas or suggestions or advise?

How have you been discriminated against? Are you positive it wasn't lack of teamwork or obedience in your position? If you have reason to file suit, you had better do it. Clear the path for other people who are being discriminated against.

I am sorry that you have fallen on hard times. Check out project now and your local churches for food baskets. It isn't shameful to be poverty-stricken. It is the American way nowadays.

Your best bet if you aren't sure if you'll find a job straight away is go ahead and file unemployment immediately so you aren't screwed in the future. I had to do this for the first time in my life and it was a big pill to swallow for me because I never saw myself having to do that, but I have bills to pay and the situation I was put in was a matter of gossip and people being catty because I needed to pick up a second job - I don't know how the laws are in your state but they'll likely just investigate the claim and give your company a chance to prove that it's all your fault and you were useless and written up countless times etc - if they can't show that you were a problem you should have no problems being able to secure yourself until you're able to find another job. It might take a little while, but if I hadn't done it I wouldn't have been able to make ends meet.

In my particular situation my company basically got reprimanded by the unemployment office for wrongful termination - it was completely out of the blue, I had never been written up or gotten in trouble, I had only called in once, I wasn't late and had multiple clients that stopped going to that center because I was gone. I had been offered a promotion to a busier center not 2 weeks prior, so it was a complete shock. The girl who wanted me fired for getting a second job ended up getting fired 3 weeks later for being useless.

Disagreeing with how you do things isn't grounds for termination unless it was a repeated problem and you've gotten in trouble for it on more than one occasion. Everything happens for a reason though, and I hope you find a better job soon.

I thought it was more like 1% owns 50% of the wealth in America. Either way, good luck.

Adam - Already working on it.

Ginz - Appreciate the offer, going to see if I can stay in my industry first if things don't look good I'll let you know.

Garg - No hard times here girl. I'm paid through the end of the month for severance and I have a couple months of "emergency" funds for this sort of thing. As for the discrimination: Can i prove it? Probably not but it's not about clearing a path it would strickly be a swift kick in the jimmy as retaliation. My boss would have to explain how I've never been written up, have a history of great performance and was well liked by pretty much everyone in the company.

Lyion - Market is fine here. Its a matter of making up my mind on what I want to do and getting what I want. May try to open my own business but not sure yet.

Everyone else - Thanks for your well wishes :) I'll keep you all updated.

Unless you signed something agreeing to at will employment in which they could fire you for no reason.

Florida is an at will state. The only link to discrimination I have is an email my boss sent me about my Navy Duty which in a nutshell went like: This posses problem, is there any way you can postpone the duty? I was out Monday - Thursday, came back in Friday and he fired me. He would never admit why he actually fired me (I think he felt threatened) but he would have to defend against that "smoking gun" of an email. At the end of the day it's a question of if I want to invest any time to make his life difficult. A girlfriend suggested I write the CEO of the company a letter but not sure if that would be very effective.

You could make a case he fired you because of your military duty...which is a big no-no.

Also, you were performing well on the front end. Are you absolutely sure you weren't losing money in the back end aka slacking?

Wait...didn't you start a thread recently about costing your company a ton of money?
