An Indian court ordered the arrest of Hollywood star Richard Gere on Thursday for kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS awareness event this month saying it was an obscene act committed in public.

Gere's repeated kisses on Shetty's cheeks at an event to promote AIDS awareness in New Delhi sparked protests in some parts of India, mostly by Hindu vigilante groups, who saw it as an outrage against her modesty and an affront to Indian culture.

Groups of men had burned and kicked straw effigies of Gere and Shetty in sporadic protests across the country after newspapers published the picture of the kiss on their front pages and TV channels aired visuals of the event.

How would you feel if someone who worked with you brought in a book called The Essential Fidel Castro? That is what Araby's coworker thinks of The Dalai Lama.

Reading anything that promotes an ideology does not necessarily mean you take that ideology as your own. Snubbing someone because of a book they choose to read without knowing why they chose to or what they gain from it is as ignorant as someone who takes anything they read as absolute truth simply because it is written word.

Or perhaps it could be the coworker snubbing her simply for being shallow and being unable to fully understand the importance of the Dalai Lama, who knows?

She moved here from China for a better life. I respected this woman, professionally and personally. Her opinions on my choice of reading were her own and I was not disrespectful to her when she expressed her disapproval. I did however, want to remind her that she left her own country for another one-a better one-and any opinions she has on the dalai lama or my book are rightfully hers, as well as my right to read it (or any other book) and for that she should be thankful, instead of critical. I said nothing though.
