Vegan parents guilty in infant murder

A 6-week-old died of starvation after being fed diet of soy milk, apple juice

The parents of a baby that died of starvation after being fed a vegan diet have been found guilty of malice murder, felony murder and first degree cruelty to children.

Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31, will get an automatic life sentence for the death of their 6-week-old infant, Crown. After being fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice, he weighed only 3 1/2 pounds when he died.

The Fulton County jury deliberated the case for about seven hours.

Prosecutors said it was a chilling case of murder by starvation, a painful and prolonged death. Attorneys representing Sanders and Thomas told jurors the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to their vegan lifestyle. Vegans typically live free of animal products.

"They're not vegans, they're baby killers," Fulton prosecutor Mike Carlson told the jury Tuesday during his closing arguments.

The couple's attorneys said they didn't realize their baby, born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

Well I highly doubt it was malicious; very sad, but they're just not very smart. I don't know how you can't realize your 6 week old is in danger if he weighs 3 pounds. There's no way if they took their child for his checkups a doctor would say yeah that's a good diet to feed your kid.

I don't think this is the first case of this, either.

The best part about it is, I doubt that a vegan diet is an option in prison.

Well I don't know if they really deserve prison - I really don't think something like this is intentional or if they even realized what they were doing - I mean they deserve some punishment for sure, but I don't know if being stupid is a crime. I mean if they really had no clue what they were doing (which it's quite possible, there are heaps of vegans who will argue to the death that it's perfectly healthy) they need some serious therapy and lessons, but I don't know if you can really classify them with trash can baby parents etc.

I disagree. A person died because of their stupidity so they SHOULD go to prison. Should they go for life on a murder charge? Maybe that is harsh, 10 years on a manslaughter charge is totally acceptable. Plus, they should be made an example of for all the other idiot vegan parents who dont want to feed their babies because it might harm an animal.

They had every opportunity to save that kid. Like you said, if they brought the kid to the doctor for a regular checkup, the doctor would have said something. It doesn't take a genius to lift up a baby that weighs 3 pounds and say, "maybe something is wrong here". Vegan diet? What about breast feeding, how does that hurt an animal?

Fucking idiots. I hope they get anal raped so it brings them back to reality.

Yeah, I really don't understand why they wouldn't breastfeed - that was the first thing that came to mind. Although perhaps even the breast milk wouldn't have been sufficient nutrition since it's going to reflect the mothers diet.

I wonder if they went to a vegan doctor.. I know that there's like entire networks of vegan people because a lot of vegans are very adamant about their lifestyle and obviously a doctor would tell them something they didn't want to hear

If there baby was only 3 1/2 pounds after six weeks, why in the world hadn't they taken him to a Doctor?

I agree with Ginz. They killed this baby. He did not have to die, and solely died through their actions. An accident is hitting a kid running out into the street. Watching a newborn atrophy and die through malnutrition while they watch is no accident.

Yeah and stupidity doesn't justify it. If someone made their kids play outside in the winter with no shoes on and the kid died of pneumonia, they can't claim ignorance, they have to be held accountable.

Maybe I am biased because I think the vegan lifestyle is absurd but this just amplifies my opinion ten fold.

They should be held accountable for their actions & lack of actions.
Through the course they chose to pursue, an innocent child was killed.
Even if the child had not died, it would be plagued with issues for the rest of its life due to a diet high in soy milk due to the amount of estrogen found therein.

I fully agree with a life sentence for the both of them.
However, they have constitutionally protected rights even in prison, their diet must be accomodated.

Agree. I don't believe they didn't know something was wrong. No doctor's appointments? A baby that weighs that little? It couldn't have looked normal, no matter how little common sense they had, they had to know something was wrong.

Exactly! How could you not notice your baby losing weight instead of gaining it? Why on earth would you make a decision to feed a newborn such a diet without extensive research on the subject?

As long as you take vitamin supplements and eat the right kinds of vegetables and fruits, a vegan diet is not so bad. You can still breastfeed and the baby would have gotten then same amount of nutrients had the mom just had a piece of chicken or whatever.
They also make soy formula which is non milk based and with added vitamins.

I also agree they should be throw in gen pop and have their crime leaked.

I would understand the vegan lifestyle if they didn't eat meat, dairy, poultry etc because they are concerned about pesticides and steroids in the meat. But they don't eat meat, dairy, poultry etc because they are against cruelty to animals? Animals were put on this planet for us to eat. If vegans got their way and we all stopped eating animals and we just let all the animals go free...can you imagine what this world would be like in 10, 20 or 100 years from now?

If you're gonna back a cause, back a fuckin human cause like poverty or darfur or something.

It's not even really a vegan thing, it's a stupidity thing. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would know you either need to feed a baby formula or breast milk till they are around a year old. Cause you give a newborn apple juice? Come on.

Actually it's probably not even a stupidity thing, the lawyer is just trying to play the stupidity card. They probably knew something wasn't right weeks back and that would account for why they didn't bring their child into the doctor, they didn't want anyone to know they screwed up, and figured it would fix itself/get better. I suppose that is still a "stupidity thing" though...

Well is it for sure that they didn't bring the kid to the doctor? I'm sure there's more info on the case somewhere, all I read was that small article. That's why I was wondering if they have a vegan doctor, too - I mean if it *is* the case that they did have a doctor but networked a vegan doctor who said it was completely ok, the doctor would be just as guilty, imo.

I simply can't understand the logic behind not breastfeeding, though.

er.. 3rd trimester abortions definitely aren't legal that I'm aware, and I'd assume that even most pro abortion people aren't okay with them
