Why is fighting accepted in Hockey? In every other sport, the fights get broken up immediately, while in hockey, the ref stands 1 foot away and watches them pound on each other.
Someone jokingly told me yesterday that it's so people will actually watch the sport, but from the hockey fanatics here, I'd assume someone has a legit answer.

I pretty much think they allow players to do it because it's already the most violent sport in the Americas. If players aren't allowed to vent their agression with fights then they're going to get hurt even worse later in the game with checks/sticks/trips. When they cracked down on fights in the minor leagues even more players got hurt because they took their agression out other ways on the ice. Another reason I think is because it's a form of intimidation towards the other team, hello Marty McSorley? Guys like him are there to protect the real superstars in the game and to keep the actual in-game violence down a bit.
Its part of getting emotional and getting your team pumped up. 2 Hockey players arent also gang bangers and they arent afraid a gang war will erupt.3 Hockey players unlike most other athletes are not pussies.
They have been trying to run fighting out of hockey for years now to most fans disapointment. It gets people pumped when your team goes at it with thier ENEMIES
They keep fucking with hockey to make it not as rough and thats really a bummer to me. MORE GOALS MORE GAOLS and the shootout shit . I wish the game was like it was before I was born or the 80s this new hockey just doesnt do it for me.

Why Immortal technique?
Perhaps its because I am afraid and he gives me courage.

It is "allowed" because it does protect a teams skill players. Its a way for the players to police themselves.
Now it is a BIG draw for Hockey, so its tollerated. I heard a statistic that the NHL believed that if they banned fighting, they would lose something like 45% of their viewers.
There are "rules" to the fight though. It lasts as long as both players are standing up on their skates. As soon as one fighter has hit the ice, they stop the fight.
