I don't know as much about the East as I should... and my Raptors knowledge is only slightly below that of pure omniscience... so... what can ya'll do to put yourselves in finals contention next year?

We're in the same boat as everyone else, need a PG (Alvin Williams has been good when he's wealthy but he has to bad legs and a huge contract) and our best low post players is Bosh (6-10 20 year old that weighs 210lbs).
We got some good players, Carter, Bosh, Marshall (great player no one really knows about) Rose.
Real problems are the fat contracts from crappy crappy players like super scrub Lamond Murray.
We have no cap and not much trade bait, aside from Carter and Bosh (who is untradable). No one wants Roses contract even though he's good.

People are trying to find fault in Cuban for not matching the offer. That's fucking CRAZY. Nash's agent is now the #2 most amazing swindler in the NBA right now... I think Houston will be the big story next year. Like LeBron was this year, everyone will be talking about Yao and McGrady. That team is gonna get tons of airtime and tons of interest from free agent guards.

I won't say that the East is BETTER than the West... but Shaq moving over certainly balances it out. All of the sudden, the West is totally open. There isn't one team that is overloaded with championship experience and drive... any two of 10 teams could concieveably be in the conference finals next year. This is why I would still give the 'power' meter a small edge to the West.
The East has a few VERY GOOD teams and a few that could potentially be strong. The West only has a few bad teams... Warriors, Clippers, Sonics, probably Portland and New Orleans. I think Phoenix will be this year's Memphis. To make matters worse for the East... Shaq moving over only counterbalances the waves that were made by Boozer, K-Mart and The Miami3© moving from 'good' East teams to 'building' West teams.
San Antonio is looking soooo fucking strong it kills me. They are doing what they always do... quietly sit in the background, making the needed trades. They dumped the only players they needed to... kept the free-agents that they couldn't lose... and filled the only necessary spot they were struggling in by signing the 2nd most accurate 3-point shooter last year in Barry. Hooooly crap that's a good team now. Parker and Ginobili are future all-stars. Duncan is my #1 pick for "pick ONE player in the league to build a team around." They have everything... can you imagine what the finals would have been like if it was Detroit / San Antone? Hell yeah...
Denver and Utah are going to be fun to watch... possibly a huge clusterfuck going on in the new Northwest division... although the Midwest is still going to be worse =/.

They got past a bunch of cookie teams... Houstong might have beaten them... San Antonio surely would have... hell, Dallas COULD have if they played like they COULD have. Arguably, we are one of the premier 'losers' so far in the off-season. Nash was probably the 2nd or 3rd biggest free-agent this Summer... and Cuban didn't have the chutzpah to re-sign him. We are still in dire need of a strong center. We are questionable on our point. We still have a Swiss-cheese defensive front. Where is the silver-lining to this nightmare?
Well... the first answer is that the off-season isn't over. Walker is a huge chunk of trade-bait that many teams are interested in. Isaiah Thomas likes both Walker and Stackhouse, and Cuban LOVES Kurt Thomas... expect to see him wearing blue next year... one way or another =p. Laettner is perfect for future-cap room since he's still a decent player who CAN play, but most important - he's on the last year of his contract... very nice. Dallas fans can take heart in that the off-season has only 'really' just started. The current roster will surely change before pre-season.
The second good news is in our youth. Starting with Marquis Daniels (now the highest paid 2nd year player in the league... more than Lebron tee hee) and Josh Howard, we are looking pretty good. Howard is one of the top performing players in the Summer leauges, grabbing 29ppg and 10rpg, he's looking like a monster out there. Daniels nearly grabbed back-to-back triple-doubles in his first two games as an NBA starter last year... he certainly proved that he CAN be our point-guard, although we'd all prefer him to take an AI-esque SG role.
Aaaaand then, we have our rookies.
Hard to make any predictions on Dallas' playoff potential in the off-season... but... I'll go on what our local reporters have said about these guys. Devin Harris is looking AMAZING out there. He scored 29 points against Sacramento's squad and a Sacramento reporter wrote that this kid, if given the starting job, will be a candidate for rookie-of-the-year... best Summer-League point-guard he's seen since Kidd. We've been reading nothing but great stuff about him, which certainly softens the blow from losing Nash. One of our more premier sports-writers said that Harris is very Nash-Like on the fast-break... GREAT news =p.
For centers, we have that phantom player from the Congo - Didier Ilunga-Mbenga (D.J.). You might remember him from the draft 3 years ago... he was touted as a possible heir to Hakeem's vacant throne... people were writing that he might be picked in the top 3 picks. Aaand then, he screws up his knee and spends 2 years getting back in shape. Don Nelson has been SO impressed with this guy that he was the FIRST Summer-League player to sign on with us... he even gave him a 2-year deal. People describe him as having an upper-body like Ben Wallace, although his legs are less powerful. He's 7-0, 213lbs. We are too cynical to expect anything short of a Shawn Bradley in the Siberian Shaq (Pavel)... so... unless we draft Dampier or someone else of his calibre, we are putting our hopes in D.J..
The problem with Dallas is all the "IFs." IF we make the good trades and get some key atheletic people in here... IF Devin Harris excels in the NBA... IF D.J. blossoms into a strong center... IF Nellie practices more than one hour of defense a month... Dallas could do it. That's far too many IFs for my taste... so for now, I'll totally agree that we are in bad shape for early playoff predictions.
Of course... the amount of IFs that Dallas has pales in comparison to those in L.A. =p.
It's going to be a ROUGH ride to the playoffs for the West. I predict that San Antonio will sit at #1 with a healthy lead over everyone else. As of 7.17.04... my top ten teams in the West look like:
1. San Antonio
2. Minnesota
3. Denver
4. Houston
5. Sacramento

7. Dallas
8. Utah
9. Phoenix
10. Totally unsure. It could be L.A... it could be New Orleans... it could be Portland... hell, it could be the Clippers... with all that cap room =p.

I was talking up Harris as possible rookie of the year before the draft. I was really hoping he would slip to 8 for the raps but that didn't happen.
I agree that SA is going to be the best team next year, and most likely Champions. A SA VS Miami final would be really cool.
I'm not sure if Denver is going to be a surprise team, but with that great group of young talent they could be a dynasty in the making.
I disagree with you on Sac though, those guys still have loads of talent, and I predict an injury free year for Webber. Might be an MVP year for him too, if he stays healthy and brings that team to the top of the west.
As for the raps. As much as people talk about Carter being traded or not being traded, I think in the end he will be dealt, maybe to Dallas, but they are going to have to get something really great in return. Our rookie center seems to be a rebounding machine, but he is going to spend the year on the bench with foul trouble. Aside from that, Chris Bosh is going to impress the crap out of everyone this year.
Word is Kidd is unhappy with NJ. Could Cuban be tempted to make a move for Kidd to replace Nash? Is there any news in Dallas about it? Or is all the trade talk about Carter?

if you read his blog (blogmaverick.com) he mentions that a few years ago he learned his lesson a few years ago and NEVER talks about 'real' pending trades until they've happened... It is why nobody saw the Antoine trades in the works... nobody saw this past Jamison trade until it occurred... so... he might be putting up a smokescreen on the Toronto/New York/Dallas deal.
Read the blog... it's just one more reason why Cuban kicks so much ass... what other owner is so public with the business?
Anyway... I'm torn on the Carter thing... I mean, we'd likely get Kurt Thomas and Carter, but lose Walker (oh noes!) to NY and... god damnit... Josh Howard to Toronto. I'm sure ya'll would LOOOoOoooove that kid up there... I wish there was someone else we could offer... hell, I'd even give up Najera to save Howard... It's just a matter of who Toronto would be interested in, which really SHOULD be Howard =/. He's on a contract year so you KNOW he'd LOVE to play 40 minutes as a starter and completely demolish people ala Artest... he'd play his heart out.
I doubt Cuban would want Kidd that much. I think that the only big name player we'd really be interested in would be a center. We are confident in our young point guards, as long as we have a dolid veteren presence to mentor them... enter Avery Johnson =p. Lately there have been a lot of mumblings about a large'ish trade to Golden State where we would not only get our desperately needed center in Dampier, we'd get our BELOVED Nick Van Excel back to mentor Marquis. That is probably a COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE scenario... but... shrug... we can dream.
IF (there it is again) we got Carter... Dallas would be a contender again. We are still loosely counting on our young centers to do the job, but all of the sudden we have a DOMINANT inside presence. Defenses HAVE to respect Carter driving the lane... and if they commit too much to stopping his monster dunks, Dirk's waving from 15 feet to shoot his 'cannot POSSIBLY miss' midrange jumpers. Plus, carter is a fuckload more 'aware' of what defense means than Walker so...
I'm all for it. I'm not drooling... freaking out excited about it like I was the idea of Shaq/Dirk/Nash... but since it IS an actual possibility (all 3 teams clearly gain from the trades)... I *will* say that I'd love to have him here.
But then, like most fans out here... I know 200 times more about the West than I do the East. T-Mac is really the only player from the East that I've followed very strongly. Is Carter a ME ME ME type player? Would he work well on a team where he's not the clear-cut obvious star? We don't need to replace Walker with someone who would be twice as bad.
I think Toronto could do very well in the off-season. Ya'll aren't an aging bunch of old farts and aren't THAT bad in cap-room... If you were able to free Carter... I think Toronto could be playoff bound.... just get the right group.

Carter isn't a me me me player. This year his scoring went down and his assist went way up because he had a few more options, Marshall and Rose, to pass too. If anything he passes too much. Most people really don't know how talented he his, he plays PG for the raps sometimes and comes up with some GREAT passes. He has a bad reputation because Charles Barkley has it in for him and most of the media pick up on it rather than do their own homework.
The deals I've heard from NY are crazy bad. I know your high on this kid Howard, but if he's really in a contract year that means we get em for one year and he bails. I could care less about Walker and that doesn't leave much else on either Dallas or NY that would entice me as a fan. The New GM of the Raps has done some odd moves since he took over though, so you just never know.

I have watched plenty of him that when it REALLY counts he screws up something. Just like Peja with the kings. Won't even take the potenial last shot of the season. At least Webber had the guts to take the shot.
I am just wondering what the Kings are gonna do. They are aweful quiet this season, and each of the last years when they were quiet something big happened.

What the crap are you talking about? In Carters biggest games of his career, the Sixers series in 2001, he played like a maniac and single handedly kept them in that series all the way till game 7 when HE TOOK THE LAST SHOT. He missed it, but he had the balls to take it.
