I still love my truck after 5 years & 120k miles. I paid $6k cash for it when it was 2 years old. I would do it all over again.

I will never buy a new car, it just does not make fiscal sense.
Let someone else break it in & depreciate it.

If/when I ever do get tired of it, I'll pass it along to a family member or friend.

We had just finished driving down to the Alabama coast from Ohio in March... I hadn't unpacked my stuff yet because I had been busy getting the hotel room while everybody else was making a mess in the car.

Leasing is flushing money down the drain with nothing to show for it. If you're gonna spend that much a month at least have a car in your driveway when you're done.

Leasing is flushing money down the drain with nothing to show for it. If you're gonna spend that much a month at least have a car in your driveway when you're done.

Not if you're like most people who trade it in before your loan is up.

I'm buying my car and plan on keeping it for a long time. My last car I gave as a gift to my youngest brother. He takes care of it well and I am sure it will last him until he's ready to buy his own. There are pros and cons to lease vs buy; Edmunds.com has some really good info on that exact topic. It's a great site for car info in general.

What difference does that make? You think anyone that's financially stable got that way by pissing away money?

And, no, having a really good job now does not make you financially stable....it just means you have a good job that could disappear tomorrow.

Leasing is typically "less" expensive over the first 3-5 years though. So if you don't want a new car every 3-5 years, yes buy one. You need more cash up front though and typically have a much larger monthly payment.

For example
to lease my f150 it is about 300.00 a month over 2 years. To buy the truck over say, 4 years, you're looking at over 600.00 a month. Once you throw in interest and all of that, buying becomes unattractive pretty quick.

Since you get dinged on interest when you lease, I know a few folks who lease cars but pay all of it off the first month. So no added interest fee to your monthly payment is made, you can save a few hundered bucks this way but need to have the savings to make that type commitment.

EDIT
buying a car is like buying a house in a way. Say you buy a $20,000 car, over four years it is like buying a $30k car (exagerating but just making a point is all), and in the end, you have a 4 year old car, with 60k+ miles on it, begining to break down, may not be under warranty, etc etc.

Don't bother trying to convince her. She doesn't lease therefore she thinks everyone who leases is "stupid with their money". I thought I did a fairly thorough job trying to explain why leasing benefits certain people in my intial post, either she didn't read it or she's too thick headed to consider anyone else's opinion.

Everyone who leases is stupid with their money. Then again anyone that buys new is, too, so there you have it.

You're trying to tell me it makes more financial sense to pay $30k for a new vehicle rather than $10k for a used one and maybe need to repair something that for sure won't add up to another $20k.

With her income (lol) she likely drives a 1985ish Aerostar that they bought for $150 down at Bob's Value Center anyways.
