New 7 Wonders of the World

Postby Griever » Mon Jun 25, 2007 7:13 am

I just recently learned about this in the local paper. Apparently, this project has been going on for a couple of years, with the actual voting going on for 1 year. Starting at 177 canidates, it has been narrowed down to 21 man-made monuments to be voted on for the New 7 Wonders of the World.

I'm extremely interested in this and I'm having a hard time deciding which 7 to choose. The Great Wall of China and Stonehenge are no brainers for me. I think Chichen Itza should be one, and I'm on the fence with Christ Redeemer and the Statue of Liberty.

Not sure if many of you already knew of this but, I thought I'd share.

Voting ends on July 7th, 7/7/07.

The Giza Pyramids were removed since they are still a wonder of the world.

So far I have:

- Great Wall
- Stonehenge
- Chichen Itza
- Taj Mahal

I'm currently debating between:

- Petra
- Christ Redeemer
- Statue of Liberty
- Acropolis
- Colosseum
- Easter Island (Did you know 887 statues have been found?)

Petra
Pyramids of Giza
Stonehenge
Great Wall
Easter Island
Machu Picchu
Acropolis

from the list they provided.
I believe they should have on the list:
The ISS (even if they are still futzing about with the computers), you can see it with the naked eye travelling the night sky around the world.
Either the Buj al-Arab or the dredged islands in Dubai City.
Hong Kong or Kansai International Airport (both are built on a man made islands at least partially).
The Chunnel... or even the new one they are building to go between Alaska & Siberia under the Bering Straight.
The Delta Works in Holland, holding off the seas so people can live there.
The Panama or Sueze canal? Monumental undertakings critical for trade across the world.
Falkirk Wheel... well it is just plain cool.
The Three Gorges Dam. I forget how many times larger than the Hoover dam it is.
The Interstate Highway system of the United States. It doesn't sound like much, but if you took it end to end, it would wrap around the entire world twice (over 48,000 miles).

That is about it off the top of my head.

It's a for profit project that won't hold the same weight as the original 7

When Lang and I were in Chichen Itza a couple weeks ago the guide kept talking about this vote. I had forgotten about it until now. He was very proud of Chichen Itza, and had really interesting things to say about it. Thanks for bringing this up, I'll give them my vote :)

i don't see why christ redeemer, seems like a simple statue, as opposed to something like taj majal which is obviously a remarkable human achievement.
