Question regarding roomates

Postby Jay » Thu Jul 26, 2007 7:22 pm

If you live in a place with your roommate and they had their significant other over all the time, would you mind? Would it bother you less or not at all even if they stayed confined to your roomate's room space and bathroom?

My girlfriends friend is having this "issue" with her roomate's boyfriend being over all the time. I argued that if the guy stays confined to the roomate's room and doesn't eat her food then what's the big deal? She argued that he shouldn't be there as much as he is (2-4 days a week). I argued back saying that she's only upset over it because she doesn't get to hang out with her roomate and otherwise has no friends besides her (to which she got offended but whatever she's a cunt). Simple case of misery loves company, jealousy or self loathing and bitterness?

If he's taking hot showers and using kitchen appliances then he should contribute a little bit... like 50 bucks a month or something.

Afaik he showers there but their smud is paid for and the only utility is electricity. The other side of the arguement is that he only comes late at night and confines himself to his gf's room and her bathroom. He doesn't eat anything there and usually brings his own food when he does. He is super quiet and the only reason she knows he is there is cuz she sees his car.

Meh, if he's over there all the time, then I can see how it would get annoying. When people are over that you don't know well, you don't feel completely comfortable around them, even if they are confined to a room. Maybe you wouldn't feel comfortable walking around in your pajamas with them around, or walking back to your room in just a towel after a shower, or maybe she's one of those people who are self conscious about people hearing them go to the bathroom - little things like that. It's stuff you take for granted when you're alone or with people you trust. It can really start to wear on you when you don't feel comfortable and at home in your own environment. Maybe she feels like has to be quiet for their sake, or that she isn't welcome around because she thinks they might want alone time.

Anyway - having him confined to a small space and being as unobtrusive as possible would help, but having him around as a constant presence would be wearing, especially if the things I mentioned above play a part. Also, maybe she simply just doesn't like him. That's a possibility too.

Well, you need to get the whole story.

When they moved in together, did they sit down and discuss the “rules?” When I had roommates we talked about this very thing – having guests over. Granted, both my roommates were chicks (which, btw make better roommates than guys) who both had boyfriends.

We all agreed that we could have overnight guests, but they had to be out the next day by noon. Also, they weren’t allowed to “use,” “borrow,” “eat” or whatever anything that didn’t belong to the person they came to visit.

If they made an agreement then she has nothing to bitch about. If they didn’t, then she might have a point and they’ll need to sit down and talk it out. They’re both paying money for rent, they both have a right to privacy and so on. Yet, they both have a right to have company – whether or not that company stays overnight is something they need to agree on.

rules, haha.

The only complaints about roomate's girlfriends were the following:

A) The woke me up while I was passed out on the couch because they were vacuuming.
B) They made egg salad with onions.
C) I walked in on them one time. For fuck's sake, if you are going to have sex at least let the rest of the household know.

Staying the night and out by noon the next morning? Are you shitting me? It's not like you're walking home and the boyfriend is drinking him self to sleep with potato chips all over the place and dirty dishes on the counter as he plays video games and watches football.

Just have her sit down with her roomate and tell her that she doesn't appreciate him spending all his time over there, if he's causing some sort of problem then there needs to be some sort of median. Other than that, it is a dumb thing to get into a debacle about.

.

I agree with this. For really introverted people just having some stranger around all the time can be pretty disconcerting. I know I'm much more self-conscious when my sister's boyfriend comes over and get annoyed by his increasing presence at the house even though he's quiet and polite - it certainly can start to wear you down. Being ruffled by frequent visitors shouldn't automatically put someone in the raging cunt category.

praise be to allah, he's moving out next weekend*, what a fuckface

*which i am 90% sure can be linked to his unwillingness to mow the lawn

Do you rent? Why wouldn't your landlord mow the lawn?

Moving is much easier than mowing the lawn.

I've never heard of a landlord mowing the lawn of a house anyone I've known who rented.

My tenant mows the yard, but most renters around here do not. It all depends on the arrangement because I sure as fuck don't want to be driving an hour one way once a week just to mow the lawn (I did provide a lawnmower for him).

It depends on the area/landlord. I'd say roughly 3/4 of the places we've lived we had to mow our own (get a service). Our place in Ohio was mowed by the landlord cuz he owned a mowing business.

I've never heard of a landlord mowing the yard, either. I'd say that's pretty rare.

What if she just can't be herself because there is a dude in the house? What if she wanted to walk around in her panties or not worry about having make-up or gosh knows what.

When you get an appartment or whatever with 1 person, and that turns into essentially 2 people, well you've sort of been mis-led. You agreed to something but the reality is not what was agreed, even if no words or documents are in place regarding the agreement.
