Ive gained about 30 pounds since I quit. but Im also eating alot more. If I wasn't afraid of having to go through chemo again, I'd start back up to lose the weight.

really if you want to loose weight while quitting it requires you going in with a fairly solid eating / work out plan before hand.

I made a terrible decision when I quit smoking to drink diet coke instead of the regular coke. I thought if I knocked out the 8 cans worth of calories/carbs whatever I was taking in daily, surely I wouldn't gain any weight, in fact I would lose...right? (Believe it or not until that point I was losing weight despite drinking that many regular cokes!)

Wrong...either it was the quitting smoking or the diet sodas not giving me enough sugar, I don't know but I ate like a crazed animal. I'm talkin tazmanian devil type shit. If it was in the kitchen, it got eaten.

I constantly felt like I was STARVING, To get an example of how it felt, go a day without eating or maybe two and that was how I felt ALL day.

I went back to drinking regular cokes (only 4 a day) and the appetite has since levelled off somewhat. I don't eat breakfast, or lunch. I have a normal dinner and usually a bowl of cereal around 8 or 9pm while watching tv at night then I go to bed.

I'm going to have to find a way to get more exercise in. That's the only solution I see. That or going a week without food lol.

Holy shit. How the hell does someone drink 8 cans of soda a day? That's insane. I drink 8 cans a month if that.

Eat less isn't always a great idea.. it even sounds like with you not eating all day you aren't even eating enough; you can't starve yourself man, anything you eat will go socked away to fat reserve. I clearly don't always take my own advice, but yeah.

That said, I'm a sodaholic, but wow that's a lot of soda to drink. Not just your teeth, but it's a wonder you don't have diabetes ><

this could be a problem, I'm no specialist but generally eating a larger number of smaller meals is the way to go

Basically what you are doing is causing your body to think it is starving, so when you eat dinner, your body tries to store it as fat... same with what ever you eat after.

What Mop said + you shouldn't eat right before going to bed, especially if you aren't eating breakfast or lunch. You are setting yourself up for a metabolic disaster.

Sorry, I'll tell you right now my knowledge on nutrition/medicine/etc is for shit. I wasn't attempting to sound like I knew for a fact despite wording it that way.

All I know is, my appettite was nowhere near as goddamn FURIOUS once I went back to normal coca cola. I don't know what caused the change, but I assumed it was whatever the difference between normal coke and diet coke was. (sugar?)

:dunno:

i didnt mean to be insulting, sorry

nicotine is a stimulant and an effect of stimulants is to curb appetite. since you stopped smoking not only do you not have a constant oral stimulus going on anymore but your appetite will increase. both of those combined mean your body is constantly telling you to shove shit into your mouth. not drinking normal coke anymore means a negative loss of around 900-1000 calories (all from sugar) per day. your body is used to those calories coming in everyday so when it doesnt have them anymore it will trigger hunger.

what you should do to stop all of this and keep losing weight? you need to find a way to be able to eat a lot of bulk but stay below your daily caloric limit. an easy way to do this is to seriously bulk up on a ton of vegetables and some fruit. fiber will fill you up and it has no calories and it's good for you and it makes you take a nice hsit. snack on carrots, celery, steamed broccoli, snap peas, apples, good fibrous salads with spinach and not drenched in creamy dressings and shit. home made beans with butterbeans/kidney beans/other white beans is good if you cook them healthy and season them nicely. it's boring food yes but you can eat a shit ton and fill yourself up on it without gaining weight.

keep your mouth busy with water, gum, vegetables, fruit. keep your stomach full with fiber. np

it is a food base that will carry over starvation mode ( 4 hoursish) is perfect before bed, hence why alot of ppl have protien shakes or dairy before bed... to rpevent the body from thinking its starving.

Thanks for the awesome advice! I plan on stocking up on the beans, God help my wife and coworkers.

When you say cook them healthy, is getting them in a can (minus the pork fat any fat etc) ok or do I actually have to get them dry and boil them?

TBH - If the boiling of beans and the soaking, ect is a time constraint take a day where you have a couple hours around the house and do enough for the week.

I do this with chicken and beans on Sundays because i am usualy home for a couple hours. Throw the beans in, slow cook the chicken... really that means during the week all I have to worry about is making the veggies to go with them.

I'm halfway through reading this that my father let me borrow. He's in his early 60's and has lost a lot of extra weight he'd been carrying around. I've already decided to quit smoking so wish me luck!

Just wanted to update the thread and thank you all for the tips, especially Duck. I've been going damn near complete vegetarian and packing in a shit ton of kidney beans. I'm addicted to the damn things! =) I have lost about 14 pounds so far. Slow goes it, I know. The only thing that i am worried about now is that my blood pressure is a little high. I think I am using too much salt. I like Worcestershire sauce and I think I am using too much. My Systolic is 149 and my diastolic is about 75. Resting pulse is about 75.
