Also, we have the benefits of being an international hub, so there are ethnic restaurants of all types. Bands of every variety come through here. We have real stores, not just Wal-Marts. Our population isn't made up of inbred hick rednecks. Our weather is better than just about anywhere else on earth. (Almost never below 40 in winter, almost never above 90 in summer, and summer humidity runs at about 40%, so none of those horrible hot & muggy days you get out east). Pay grades are much higher.

And, most important of all: We're not goddamn Texas.

*shrug* Look at it this way, the higher the percentage of male homosexuals, the more women there are for the rest of us to pick from.

987 here will get you a two bedroom place in a nice neighborhood, or a three bedroom in an okay apartment complex. depends on where in charleston you want to be. downtown-you'll pay 987 for a one bedroom loft.

I'm lucky that the doctor I work for let me rent this condo from him..he's giving me a super sweet deal and I'm close to work (both jobs) and I'm in the area that I love.

Renting anything is a waste of money... less it's a keg you're planning on returning when it's empty. Better off buying.

haha you can pay 1k for a shack in the hood where I live.

Right now I'm paying 925 with garaged parking for 715SQ feet. But it's a sweet area, so it's a premium. The suck part is they are getting ready to convert all these apartments into condos. So I'll have to move again in 10 months when my lease is up.

Not if you cannot afford it. There are plenty of people in the last couple years who bought houses because of that same mentality and a bunch of people cannot afford their loan payments now. Right now I would need to pay twice my what I am paying in rent to buy a house, not worth it to me - as I don't like eatting top ramen for dinner every night.

I am not big on picking up girls in bars, I think its a horrific way to meet someone. But if I had to choose a bar to pick up women, gay bars are the place to do it.

So I salute you our new gay overlords, with your gwen stefani and trance music. Your cheaper drinks, and your outstanding fashion sense...

You're right runamonk... BUT if you can afford to pay the rent of a house, you can afford to pay the mortgage of a house. Renting a house is a huge lose of money.

If you're in a situation where a 500 dollar a month rent better fits your financial conditions, then you probably shouldn't try to buy a house. However, ultimately, buying is much better in the end - if you're smart enough to get a decent rate and have it locked in.

I rented for a while and found that what I was paying in rent was pretty much the same as what I would have been paying in mortgage, so I bought a condo. Now when I'm ready to sell I'll get back everything I put into the mortgage plus some.

As for Harrison - little boy when you finally move from your mother's basement then you can come talk to us big people about things like rent and mortgages... until then go back downstairs and play with your action figures, child.

to be fair tho, unless you've been able to save up for a decent downpayment, it's tough to get a mortgage

obviously, the banks have really been relaxing these rules lately and giving mortgages to just about anyone now.

but yeah, usually monthly mortgage payments are less than rent

No you're not. You are better off buying if you are staying for an extended length of time. Otherwise in the long run it's wiser to rent, if there's a good chance you will move.

The housing market is extremely volatile, and not the easy investment it was 10 years ago.

Well, we are deciding to rent so we can save and eventually get a home mortgage
