Sony only owns about 20% of MGM at this point and lost the distribution rights to most of the catalog to Fox. Now Fox is still a strong supporter of Blu-Ray but will definitely release titles on HD-DVD if Blu-Ray fails to pull the market share Sony promised as will Disney and their other "exclusive" studios.

So, NO, they don't own "40% of ALL source material" There is a lot of money tied up in the catalog and the actual owners of that material are not stupid enough to lock out profit opportunities outside of Blu-Ray if the format falls flat.

Google what? Who owns most of the HD market? The answer is Blue Ray with almost 70%. :dunno:

Unlike you, I have the luxury of looking at it objectively, considering I dont own a Blue- Ray or HD-DVD player.

Find the company that will make a player that will support, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, SD before it hits the shelves and invest in that company. Your stock will double a week after it hits the shelves and triple during Xmas season.

i kinda suspect that blu-ray and hd-dvd are just interim standards and something else will come along that will finally solve the issue of competing standards

specifically, I think the days of hard coded media are almost over

/sigh...the same market you would have cited if 70% of high def dvd owners purchased HD-DVD instead of Blue-Ray. Way to play stupid though.

The players are already out but cost $1000.

And a friend of mine has one of these players. The only drawback is, you can't access the special features menus of the HD-DVDs. Go figure.

Can you really tell THAT big of a difference from normal damn DVDs? Even if you could, im still going to stick to good ole DVDs. There cant be that much of a damn difference in them to make me want to spend that much money or to sit here and bicker like girls about it

I am all about video game sales. All these fuckers with complete absence of creativity require their video games to be as real as you and me. So, to be successful, you need more detail, to handle more detail, you need more data, to handle more data, you need more data capacity.

Yeah, I guess someday I'll have to see it for myself. I'll eventually catch it on someone elses stuff, but theres no way im spending that kind of money for prettier shit on TV. Ive got more important to soend money on.

But I guess to each his own. To some people its like a hobby or something. They spend money on TV accessories, and I go buy fourwheelers and stuff :dunno:

If you don't have a high def TV then there's no point. If you own a high def TV, then you are not doing it justice buy watching standard def DVD. Whether it's THAT big a difference is debatable but it's big enough to be worth it to me.

$200 for a player and 8 movies? Doesn't seem that bad to me. The disks are still pretty spendy at Best Buy and places like that but from Amazon, most releases are $20.

there's not a HUGE difference between HD-DVD and a good upscaling dvd player

the difference is there if you're amazingly picky, but it's not like going from VHS to DVD (imo)

the only real place I REALLY notice the difference in HD is in sports broadcasts
