Clinton says she'd negotiate with Iran

CANTERBURY, N.H. - Hillary Rodham Clinton called Barack Obama naive when he said he'd meet with the leaders of Iran without precondition. Now she says she'd do the same thing, too.

During a Democratic presidential debate in July, Obama said he would be willing to meet without precondition in the first year of his presidency with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.

Standing with him on stage, Clinton said she would first send envoys to test the waters and called Obama's position irresponsible and naive.

But asked about it Thursday by a voter, the New York senator said twice that she, too, would negotiate with Iran "with no conditions."

"I would engage in negotiations with Iran, with no conditions, because we don't really understand how Iran works. We think we do, from the outside, but I think that is misleading," she said at an apple orchard.

She characterized her recent vote to label Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization as a way to gain leverage for those negotiations.

Obama and other rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination have been criticizing Clinton's vote late last month in favor of the resolution, comparing it to her 2002 vote authorizing the war in Iraq.

They have suggested that the Iran vote was the first step toward a military invasion there.

Of course she would...unless there was a scandal to cover up...then she's bomb them.

Ahmadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth... he wants ALL Jews dead. Hussein may have been that way too, but we don't have to worry about him anymore, do we?

Not keeping lines of communication open with someone we are threatening to bomb is just absurd. Communication doesn't = compromise. It does mean making motives and intent clear.

Hell, the US kept far more open and direct communications with the soviets, and they had thousands of nuclear missiles aimed and ready to fire at us for decades. As time goes on, we are just now increasingly finding out that we almost met honest-to-god global annihilation on several occasions due to misunderstandings of motive and intent, entirely due to lack of communication.

Yep, if not for clear negotiation channels, the Cuban Missile Crisis would have rapidly turned into a shooting war. Indeed, the problems they faced in getting open communications during that crisis is why the hotline phone between the white house and the kremlin was put in, so that either leader could contact the other, immediately, with no intermediaries.

Being willing to negotiate with anyone is a GOOD thing. Obviously doing whatever they want us to do regardless of consequence would be utterly retarded, but that's not what she said she'd be doing, now is it? So yes, considering that Kruschev, Breshnev, etc were at least as power-hungry and ruthless as Ahmadinejad, and were far, far, FAR bigger threats to the US, and negotiations there were vital, methinks negotiations with Iran are important. Not to mention, who's to say Ahmadinejad is going to get re-elected next time their election cycle comes up? From all reports, he's pissed off a lot of people back home.
