Joe Torre

Post by Diekan »

The average salary of an NFL head coach is something like 2.5 million (according to Forbes back in 2003). So, it's probably higher now, but I can't see by much.

Joe was offered 5 million a year as a base plus something like 1 million per post-season win (something along those lines). He turns it down.

Even at 5 million he's still the highest paid coach in baseball. That's not counting all the free be's he gets... you know... he walks into any restaurant in NYC, I doubt he pays for many meals... etc...etc.

I don't follow baseball as much as I do football, but it doesn't seem that baseball coaches have to work as hard as a football head coach. Maybe they do, someone who knows more about baseball can clarify.

So, do you think he's just being greedy? Do you think he was already being overpaid? Do you think he did the right thing by turning down the contract?

It's not about the money bro. Joe Torre gets his job threatened, then they only offer him a 1 year deal. That is why he declined. Also, you can argue how much he gets paid as a coach and all that, but remember how much money the Yankee organization makes and also remember that he has a lot to do with why the Yanks make that much.

From what I understand, it had nothing to do with money whatsoever.

What it had to do with was 2-fold:

    1) Length of term. He dealt with a ton of crap this year cause it was the last year of his contract, with lame duck status, etc. He didn't want that again.

    2) By the options package they offered, they basically implied he didn't care enough about winning in the postseason. Heard that comment from more than one of the ESPN analysts about the offer.

Plus, there was no negotiation at all, it was a "Take this or else", and it was the business wonks running things, not the baseball people.

Torre felt insulted, probably rightly, and told them to stuff it.

If you want to see Joe Torre's managing "prowess", check out his record with teams where the best shit out there WASN'T store bought for him and served on a silver platter. (ie his years as a Cardinals manager.)

Truth be told, ANYONE could manage the fucking Yankees just as well as him with the goddamn talent they have bought.

the thing that boggles my mind, is the sheer VOLUME of statistics that are kept in baseball

i guess the game is so slow and boring that even 100 years ago they were inventing stats to keep just to pass the time

football has nothing on baseball in terms of stats, especially for the length of time they've been keeping crazy stats

shit, football just started recording sacks in 82ish? or was it 84

      early 80's anyway

Sure he was overpaid, but what the club did to him was basically a huge insult. I don't blame him for turning it down - I don't think he's necessarily anymore talented than the other managers but I said when it was mentioned to me that it was bs and they wouldn't fire him - instead they basically publicly humiliate him then expect him to take whatever they throw at him.

Complete crap really, it's a matter of pride, not the money.
