NASA to Search Files on '65 UFO Incident

WASHINGTON - NASA has agreed to search its archives once again for documents on a 1965 UFO incident in Pennsylvania, a step the space agency fought in federal court. The government has refused to open its files about what, if anything, moved across the sky and crashed in the woods near Kecksburg, Pa., 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Traffic was tied up in the area as curiosity seekers drove to the area, only to be kept away from the crash site by soldiers.

The Air Force's explanation for the unidentified flying object: a meteor or meteors.

"They could not find anything," one Air Force memo stated after a late-night search on Dec. 9, 1965. Several NASA employees also were reported to have been at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said a flatbed truck drove away a large object shaped like an acorn and about the size of a Volkswagen bus. A mock-up based on the descriptions of local residents sits behind the Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

UFO enthusiasts refused to let the matter die and journalist Leslie Kean of New York City sued NASA four years ago for information.

"This is about the public's right to know," Kean said. "We would be doing this lawsuit regardless of whether UFO groups were interested in it or not. It's a freeodm of information issue."

The agency has turned over several stacks of documents which Kean says are not responsive to the request, an argument that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan agreed with.

In March, Sullivan rejected NASA's request to throw the case out of court, resulting in negotiations that led to the agency promising last week that it will conduct a more comprehensive search.

Kean said Friday that she sued NASA rather than the Army because the space agency a decade ago released some relevant documents on the case.

Because imagine the impact it would have on our organized religions as one example. If God,Buddah,Allah etc made man then who made E.T? Another Godlike being? Or maybe it's just proof that we weren't made by a supreme being but rather evolved from some primordial sludge. Almost any religion would be turned on it's ear. Which IMO wouldn't be a bad thing.

Then there's the conspiracy buffs. The government kept it from them we must overthrow the government. Or maybe they will take it as a sign that were about to be nuked from outer space! You would see all the militant redneck groups running around "saving mankind"

Remember the mass chaos that ensued when War of the Worlds was read on-air? Even though during the broadcast it was stated repeatedly that it was a work of fiction people didn't bother to hear that, rather mass panic set in. Imagine if it were proved to be true that we aren't alone?

Overall if any government agency came forward with irrefutable proof of other sentient life we would see a mixture of all the above and more. Total and utter chaos across the globe. Eventually though the dust would settle and we would carry on. In the short term it's bad news but in the long run it's for the best IMO.

C.S. Lewis had some interesting ideas on the potential crossover of religion and science fiction, go check out the Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Malacandra, and That Hideous Strength

way more interesting than that stuffy snoozathon about lions and witches

In all honesty, I thought Sithos post/point was actually very interesting.

You really think that the world's followers will suddenly drop their religion? I don't think so.

The church used to say the sun revolved around the earth. Did the discovery of that being false collapse Christianity?

Did the discovery of the world being spherical collapse religions worldwide?

I didn't get that same message from his sentence:

I think you are reading to deeply into what I wrote, either that or you are feeling like the big tough kid on the block and want to argue. So I'll oblige you.

Your examples also are from a time when religion held an iron grasp on the populace. It ran your daily life.A word from the local priest could also end your life. Back then burning, beheading or drowning witches was commonplace. You spoke against the church and you sealed your fate. Because of such far reaching power the scientific evidence and any damage it may have caused was highly mitigated.

Nowadays we have religions that are widely accepted that espouse those same values that folks were killed for in the olden days. I would hope that we have become much more enlightened since that time. The church although powerful in it's own right holds nowhere near the sway it did those hundreds of years ago. Back then you either were part of the church or a heathen for the most part. Nowadays there's alot more grey areas. Overall there is less "fanatisism" for lack of a better term.

I never said that religion(s) would collapse. There have been and always will be believers in any religion. Regardless of what could happen they will still carry on. But I do believe that most organised religions would go through a period of chaos and uncertainty. It happened back those hundreds of years ago. If you think that back then there was no upheaval amongst the church when those points were proven then you are mistaken.

Do I think exactly everything I typed in my previous post is going to happen? No. Do I think it COULD happen? Yes. To varying degrees it could happen all over the world. I was using examples of what could happen.

It was you who decided to take my post, find something you didn't like or you misunderstood and then post your tough guy response.

Trust me, I didn't need that "history lesson".

The fact you included Buddhism into that is why I originally laughed.
