I once went to a restaurant (steakhouse) and I was using my knife and fork to eat the ribs, I got strange looks so I stopped and used my fingers.

Anyway basic respectful table manners are one thing, deciding never to go out with someone again because they draped their napkin wrong seems crazy to me. It's not the same at all as traditional routines of other cultures. If you go to a Japanese restaurant and you have to remove your shoes, that would fall under a basic rule to me. Now if you went to that same place and were laughed out because when you removed your shoes you didn't place them left to right and then properly pick them up after ward to put them on right to left, that would be something completely extra to me.

I've eaten at the most humble country kitchen places and i've also had gourmet meals at charity functions. Give me the country kitchen any day, I can't stand that salad fork, soup spoon, crap, i'm agreeing with Zan here. It's all about rich people setting themselves apart from not as rich people. There's nothing necessary or cultural in that stuff, it's all image.

Stop being a contradictory asshole.

We aren't looking down at "their" rituals, we're looking down at the fact they look down on others.

that's the point i've been trying to make all day you dipshit

there's no looking down involved

atensen said he liked it when someone knew the same rituals as he did

why you constantly associate praise for one, as insult for another is just beyond me

for the 3rd time.. it's not about rituals, he is saying it as a one size fits all thing. if you go into a japanese restaurant, of course you do not look strangely at the ritual of taking your shoes off. do the same in an american restaurant, a waiter would ask you to put your shoes back on your nasty feet lest you violate health code (hello, situational, key word here.) if you go to a black tie affair, it would be odd to go in jeans and a sweatshirt, just the same as if you go to a steakhouse, it's ODD to sit there making sure your 1 fork that youre provided is the right size and for the salad and to make sure your one napkin is draped properly

again.. it is *SITUATIONAL* and he's saying, matter of factly, that if someone does not know how to use the black tie affair etiquette in ANY eating situation, it says something about their basically 'trashy' upbringing

at some point we all became domesticated and eating with our mouths open was no longer acceptable, so anyone who does it is "wrong" but not really. basically, no one ever told them it wasn't "right" you see?

In my home we did not chew with our mouths open or talk with our mouths full. No one cared about napkins, etc..my Granny taught me some of that etiquette but no one used it. Elbows all around the table (especially during fried chicken night) but no one cared...we were polite eaters, at least.

I've been around wealthy people who have horrible table manners. It really goes back to how you were raised. Those same people might be able to tell you what to do with their napkin, but it might be while they're chewing some lobster. this guy I hang out with from time to time (as friends) eats with his mouth wide open, it's so bad I won't eat with him anymore. obviously I like the guy or I wouldn't hang out with him, but I would never be able to live with his eating habits so I'll never date or marry him. doesn't make him despicable, just unable to take to movies, lunch or dinner. I don't look down on him, instead I wish his Mother had taught him to close his mouth while chewing.

it's not even necessarily an "elitist" attitude anymore (in my opinion) because it really seems limited to those who were actually taught such etiquette, which in the napkin case, I can see being sort of elitist or snobby because it isn't anything anyone would pay attention to UNLESS you were around people who would actually take notice...and again-I guarantee you that while they might know what proper napkin etiquette is, it doesn't mean they have good table manners!

chewing your food with your mouth open is disgusting!

anyone offended by improper napkin use is probably snobby.

I was just thinking it's funny how a thread about fat girls derailed into etiquette.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

They give you a bunch of these crepe-like things that you use to put the food in and pick it up, then you just seat the stuff with the bread stuff. Some awesome food, actually. Spicy as fuck too, lots of it. One dish we had, the initial spicy hit was hotter than anything else I'd eaten. The weird thing about it was that it didn't build up hotter and hotter like mexican food or wasabi do, say. First bite was as hot as it got. Still, it was like getting kicked in the face it was so hot, but damn was it good.

Anyway, just pointing out that even utensils aren't universal.

Hi, so I know that I'm kinda of going back to a few pages ago, but after reading Mindia's weight chart, I wanted to put down how I'd seen healthy weight ratio's before:
100 lbs for 5 feet tall, and 5 lbs for every inch thereafter, and then fluctuations w/in 10 lbs up or down from that number would be considered a medically healthy range. From my experience this has been true, at least for me anyway...I'm 5'7ish so my ideal weight is 135 and I hang out around 133, although after Halloween maybe a little bit more...but if I weighed 120 that would be really creepy. I was down to 126 after I had my daughter and people started to comment on my being too thin :( and I really did feel like it. Before I had my kid I was more like 140, but I've been a vegetarian for awhile now and it really keeps the weight off for me.

    Anyway, hi people.

Good, I still read the boards, but I'm busy with school and work and trying to sell a litter of puppies (anyone in Portland want a Boston Terrier?) and all kinds of stuff! Plus, I'm not totally used to this new board, but I do like to spy on you guys.

Do you have any pics of the pups?
