People that buy stand alone players buy more movies. That's a fact. HD-DVD players have nearly a 5-1 attach rate, Blu-Ray has less than one.

Video stores buy more media based on demand for it so that averages in to the sales and attach rates. For the amount of BR hardware out there, the demand for movies is pitiful for the format compared to HD-DVD.

Not since the PS3 was released, no. PS3 buyers had NOTHING to do on their boxes so a few have picked up some movies here and there leading to a pitiful .6 attach rate or something like that. Considering the installed hardware base? Yes. Every stand alone HD-DVD player sold has generally lead to 4 movies being purchased. With a potential 200-300K more stand alones being sold over the holidays, not including the 100K or so that have sold in the last month, expect HD-DVD to surpass BR's lead in a matter of months. The average Joe WILL NOT pay $400 for the benefits that HD media offer. They will in fact pay $200 or less for it though as has been demonstrated by the HD stand alone activity over the last week or so. Without a sub $200 player, BR is fucked. It will NEVER reach mass market penetration without it and by the time they do hit that mark sometime next year, HD-DVD will have an insurmountable number of inexpensive stand alones sold and in peoples homes, not sitting on display and collecting dust at Best Buy where the BR players have sat for the last year.

I barely do anything BUT watch movies on my PS3 since I'm too cheap to buy games and blockbuster's rental price for video games is asinine ($7.99). Blockbuster also just fisted me on my rental plan and recently took away my 1 free video game rental coupon per month, which was one of the bigger reasons why I subscribed, but that's another story =P.

I don't plan on actually buying many bluray movies though in the near future besides must-haves like 300.

Friend of mine with a PS3 has probably 15-20. His wife is eagerly awaiting the Disney re-releases coming up soon, and she's going to get all of the old-school Disney films (Snow White, Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, etc) as soon as they're released. He even has the BBC version of that Discovery series, Planet Earth on Blu-Ray. Man, does it look awesome when played on his 1080p projector system, screen covers a good chunk of wall.

He uses it far more for movies than anything else, though he's waiting for the HD version of Gran Turismo to get done and come out.

Yes, people watch fucking movies on their PS3's since that's about all you can do with them. But for every person that buys 4 movies, there are 3-4 more that buy NONE. The PS3 is NOT going to win the war for Sony. The PS3 owner demographic is not the same one that buys movies except for blockbuster films like 300, etc.

I have friends with PS3s and nice BR collections as well but I have more friends with PS3s that sit and do nothing or are hooked up to 27" SD TV's with no intention of EVER buying or watching movies on them.

BTW Planet Earth HD-DVD looks fanfuckingtastic as well. I've been watching an episode every other night or so for the last few weeks. They looked great in broadcast but the HD-DVD's are amazing.

Walmart sells more DVD's than pretty much all other sources combined. The people who shop at Walmart will decide the format war and Walmart has chosen a side in the "war". Game over.

Neither format will have the market penetration that DVD had BUT I think one format will come through with studio support from almost all houses while the other fades in to obscurity.

Downloaded media will not be mainstream for another 5-10 years.

Toss, to answer your question, I have not purchased a single Bluray DVD, and when I do own some, it will be because my rebate with the PS3 finally came in for 5 free ones.

I currently have no need to own the media since I generally don't watch movies more than once and my blockbuster plan keeps a bluray movie in my mailbox a couple times a week.

I think digital delivery will eventually trump both formats, as well.

I actually think Microsoft is secretly banking HD to prolong the war, since they make more cash via direct delivery of LIVE! than from DVD sales.

It's not the people with the fileservers.. It's the people using media center, and other electronics with their broadband to download and watch movies.

Interestingly enough all of my friends with PS3s use them for Blu-ray players and rent movies. I think Sony dropped the ball on digital distro, though, and needs to catch up and use the PS3 via broadband to buy media a la LIVE.

How the fuck is $500 the same price as $200?

If you are going to do this stupid ass "deal", why not buy the HD-A3 for $200, get your 10 free movies and spend another $399 for the cheap PS3 and get the best of both worlds for $100 more? I mean since everyone has $600 laying around anyways.
