Huge operating cost, but as battery technology improves that should go down.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Honda will introduce a state-of-the-art hydrogen-powered car in the United States next year, offering a glimpse of the next generation of environmentally friendly vehicles, officials said Wednesday.

Speaking at the LA Auto Show, the Japanese auto giant said they planned to offer the zero-emissions FCX Clarity to customers on a limited long-term lease basis for a cost of around 600 dollars a month.

The expense of fuel cell technology means Honda is still a long way from putting the car into mass production, but its debut represented the "significant progress" in developing the cars for real world use.

"The FCX Clarity is a shining symbol of the progress we've made with fuel cell vehicles and of our belief in the promise of this technology," said American Honda chief executive Tetsuo Iwamura.

"We are working to overcome obstacles to the mass-market potential of zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell automobiles," Iwamura added.

The Clarity's only emission is water, Honda said.

Honda did not reveal the number of cars which will be made available via the lease program or actual cost of each unit.

The largest raw material cost of these is the electron permeable membrane during the energy synthesis.

A couple friends of mine are involved in both the design of the Honda itself and the design of the fuel cell.

They've made some great strides... this also has huge military applications as the cost per gallon of oil derived fuel is currently pushing $100 in Iraq & for every 10,000 gallons transported in the supply chain it is approximated that one life is lost.

Facts and sourcing for that, please. I'm sure it's high, but I doubt it's that high.

The source is an electrical engineer from Battelle Memorial Institute currently working on fuel cell generators.
I'm sure that a variety of NDAs and security clearances were broken during the course of our conversation.

I cannot provide a link to any documents for you to look at as I never saw them myself. However, given my friend's proximity to that particular project, I have absolute faith in what he stated as being closer to the facts than what any website could provide.

It's $96/barrel right now. What's so hard to understand about prices reaching $100/barrel?

BMW has had a hydrogen powered car (7 series) for years now. Only reason they haven't gone into mass production is the lack of infrestructure.

You know, call me irresponsible, I don't give a fuck, but I couldn't give two shits less about something environmentally healthy as I could about something that isn't going to anally rape me everytime I need to drive somewhere. I know that I am not alone with this either.

(Mostly because no matter how eco-conscious the hippies wanna be, they are NEVER going to convince the son of a bitchin chinks to do the shit clean so whats the fucking point? They outnumber us AND don't give a flying shit about pollution, etc!)

These hydrogen cars sound awesome but for now you might as well be asking folks to pay 9 dollars a gallon.

The bigger problem is our communities are all based on driving cars place, versus walking. It's why we're both fat, and gas is very expensive.

I'm talking COMMUNITIES. City folks have no issues as there is mass transit, and other things.

Suburbia generally has a bunch of houses lumped together. Then 5 miles away is the shopping. It'd make more sense to design it so the shopping was nearby and convenient, but it seems our domecile's are built with driving in mind, always.
