seems like it would be for lower-tech folks. i say that because if you have an ipod/zune whatever, you can do audiobooks, and if you have a laptop you can get any publicaiton/newspaper you could want... seems like a big waste of money, especially for 399.00

I agree with Mindia. I read a lot of ebooks, because I have a personal library of hundreds of books and I just ran out of space. That said I have no desire to use the kindle or the service. The books are not priced well, the device is huge and bulky, it's just not appealing. Maybe after they put some additional work into it.

Seems priced for people who don't mind dropping money on techno gadgets (ie people who are technically oriented) yet content wise seems aimed at an audience that is technically challenged. At best I think the majority of sales would be as gifts, like instead of buying your grandmother a laptop and dealing with the inevitable calls for help.

I'd love to get one, personally, given I read constantly. Books are much cheaper, and delivered instantly, and it's got excellent additional features, such as mag/newspaper subscriptions on the cheap. If one purchases and reads a lot, this would be invaluable. I can see it paying for itself in a year with book savings.

I dunno; I read a lot lately as well, and the kindle is surely a neat little idea.. but the cost is just so high. I have a small bookstore locally that has everything i could ever want and new the books are always 20% off, used they're 50% or more and all are in excellent condition, so I can't imagine paying that much to have it electronically. If the cost wasn't so high it'd be feasible possibly, but also the matter of sharing books once I'm finished etc..I certainly wouldn't want to loan out a kindle.

yeah, i read constantly also, and i just don't see the use for it.... i just always have the 1 to 3 books i am reading in my car or bag... seems like mostly a novelty

and, you cand upload tons of content, for free, on an ipod anyway, i have access to hundreds of UC Berkely lectures (along with other universities) and, etc...

with the interface, and the way it's held, it still feels like reading a paperback

If it was closer to $100, I'd buy one for sure. All the tech manuals I page through every day would be reason enough to get one. I didn't notice if it allows you to load up any file you want or if you need to buy everything through their online store...

it's proprietary amazon and it only mentioned downloading their stuff you buy.... you get access to the superfast cell connection too, so i don't imagine they would allow people access to it to download anything they wanted...
