Exactly my argument against any yahoo having a gun

Postby Arlos » Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:59 pm

Couldn't illustrate more completely why I don't like the concept of guns in the homes of the average citizen. Yeah, it's legal cause of the 2nd amendment, so I certainly wouldn't argue taking guns away, but I wouldn't shed 1 tear if we had a new amendment overturning the 2nd. Just maybe if training and certification were required, shit like this wouldn't happen.

NATCHEZ, Miss. -- A Natchez man shot and killed his wife when he mistook her for an intruder in their home, according to police.

Police Chief Mike Mullins said Glenn and Deborah Mizell awoke around 4 a.m. Tuesday to the sound of their barking dog. Mullins said Glenn Mizell went to investigate, taking a pistol with him.

Mullins said Glenn Mizell began checking through the house and was unaware his wife had left the bedroom and gone into the kitchen. Mullins said when Mizell saw her figure in the dark, he fired his gun once.

Authorities said he shot Deborah Mizell, 49, once in the chest and died at the scene.

Mullins said a preliminary investigation shows the shooting was an accident.

good point, arlos and I agree.

My dad had a nightmare that the ceiling was caving in and he woke up frantic and was reaching under the bed for a rifle...that was back when I was twelve or so...

I was pretty scared that out of a bad nightmare he'd go for his gun and never liked that my dad had them in our house. I guess something like this could happen to anybody..

I think far more people have firearms in their homes then people who shoot their spouse. Now granted I am intoxicated atm, having finished off some of the Crown Royal (go Canada) that I did not polish off new years eve... but did anyone else not find the story Arlso posted suspicious? The guy wakes up to the dogs barking, does not notice his wife is not in the room much less beside him in bed (okay maybe he makes her sleep on the floor or a separate bed, whatever), and so goes without saying does not attempt to wake her up. He then searches the house, not finding his wife who he didn't notice was not in the room with him. Ah screw it... he did not even notice his wife wasn't in the room WTF...

Know your target before you shoot.. it's a pretty basic concept. Another might be don't fucking shoot your wife, but I honestly never thought that needed to be in a firearms safety course, common sense isn't so common.

FYI Tikker and Zanchief... good god damed booze 8D.

How is this logic any different than illegalizing alcohol and the like? I'd be willing to bet the deaths from drunk driving and drunken rage and the like are comparable to stupid-gun deaths. Dangerous items combined with stupid people will occasionally lead to unfortunate lethal or harmful results. It's tragic but a particularly bad idea to support infringing on peoples' freedom because of such cases.

haha...oh man.

No, I do realize that not everyone is going to screw up like this guy, I mean I did ask myself "was it really an accident?"

I just don't like guns and I know you all think that's crazy. whatevah~

My son mentioned something about a gun the other day in front of my gentleman caller and I had to remove him from the room and have a big boy sit down with him for ten minutes about how i do not allow that discussion in my home in front of company.

I thought that too, Lueyen. Sounds like a pretty story to me.

if you read it, though, and i'm not justifying the stupidity.. it says *they* woke up to the sound of their barking dog. so to play devils advocate, they both woke up frightened, HE went to investigate, leaving the room, then SHE went to the kitchen a bit after, likely afraid to be alone in the bedroom.. so he obviously wouldn't know she left the room as he wasn't in it when she left it.

So he murdered his wife. How does that make it any better? No gun, no murder.

If it was deliberate then the choice of weapon doesn't matter. He could have gotten the same effect with a baseball bat.

That really isn't true. The pathology it takes to point and click is far different then beating a loved one too death with a bat.

to be fair, if she's a loved one, he's probably not going to beat her to death to start with

I do agree that it takes a different mentality to just point and shoot, as opposed to actually getting your hands dirty

let's just ASSUME for a minute that the story is 100% true

he saw a shape, panicked and fired a shot

you would be way less likely to get a fatality with a taser or a baseball bat, etc etc

Also if he was lying, there's really no way of covering it up as an accident if he beat his wife to death with a bat.

drop the murder angle ;)

if he beats her to death with a bat, it's just a different lie he'd tell

Poison was the main method before mainstream access to guns I'd imagine.

Much less personal that way too.
