DeBeers Class Action Lawsuit

Postby Kramer » Tue Jan 15, 2008 9:10 am

here's the site: https://diamondsclassaction.com/

and here's some info:
This website provides information about a proposed settlement of class action lawsuits concerning the price of diamonds and diamond jewelry. The proposed settlement is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The defendants are certain companies within the De Beers Group.

The class actions are brought on behalf of persons and businesses who purchased loose gem diamonds or jewelry or other products containing gem diamonds in the United States.

The Court has conditionally certified two classes, or groups, of diamond buyers: the Direct Purchaser Class and the Indirect Purchaser Class. Members of the Direct Purchaser Class purchased from De Beers or De Beers' Diamond Mining competitors while members of the Indirect Purchaser Class purchased from someone OTHER THAN De Beers or De Beers' Diamond Mining Competitors. The Indirect Purchaser Class is divided into two subclasses: Consumers and Resellers. Select the links below to obtain detailed information about each Class.

Consumers: All persons located in the United States who purchased any diamond or diamond jewelry or other products containing gem diamonds for personal use and not for resale between January 1, 1994 and March 31, 2006. For example, Consumers include people who purchased diamond jewelry to wear or to give as a gift.

Resellers: All persons or entities located in the United States who purchased for resale any gem diamond or diamond jewelry or other product containing gem diamonds between January 1, 1994 and March 31, 2006 from someone other than De Beers or De Beers' Diamond Mining Competitors. Resellers include diamond jewelry manufacturers and retailers, among others.

Direct Purchasers: All persons or entities, except Sightholders, for the period they had Sightholder status, located in the United States who purchased any gem diamond directly from De Beers or De Beers’ Diamond Mining Competitors from September 20, 1997 to March 31, 2006.

    A) i don't disagree with you
    B) it costs nothing but about 135 seconds to fill out a claim, like i did
    C) reading the reports, it seems as if the process is in the final phases
    D) i could also be wrong, if true, then refer to A and B

Yeah, I must say buying a tiny shiny rock for several hundred/thousand dollars isn't money well spent. :/

Unfortunately, the driving force behind purchases of Diamonds are women, what with their bizarre raccoon-like obsession for shiny & sparkly things.

Think twice before you buy those things man. They are worthless rocks that people die every day to dig out of the ground. Even if you buy the Canadian ones, you are still paying ridiculous amounts of money for something that has very little real value. It's a scam from beginning to end and many, many people are getting stinking, filthy rich along the way. Not only do they make a sick amount of money off the stones, they also LOAN you the money at ridiculous rates to buy a stone priced well above what the normal person can afford to spend.

        Scam.

        Bullshit.

diamonds are not rare, never have been. while debeers does have a monopoly it just happens to be a global one and really antitrust doesnt work globally (or even in the us if microsoft escaped the axe)

I've never understood the obsession with diamonds myself. I just think it's a total status symbol for idiots to flash around. One of my co-workers just got engaged and I swear she talked more about the ring then her fiance. She ran all around the building flashing it at everyone. I prefer jewelry that is unique; just twisted wires and different clunky gemstones, or just simple hoops. I'd rather my eventual husband find a ring that he put some thought into, that was really something representative of me rather than some stupid rock just because it's a diamond. Well that's my take anyway.

Totally agreed. I think they're pretty sure, but Jonathan and I were talking about this one day and he said that his idea of a nice ring is just a big honkin solitaire on a white gold or platinum band.. I told him never, ever get me a ring like that - thoughtless, boring, dime a dozen whose only purpose is to flash around a big pricetag.

Don't get me wrong, when the time comes I'd like a pretty ring, but something unique and thoughtful is much more important than the size of some shiny rock.

my farmor left me a ring when she passed that's about 130 years old now.. i wear it every day, probably completely obliterating the value of it but it's probably my favorite piece that i've ever owned. just a little diamond in an illusionist setting (which they don't even do anymore, so sad) with a webbed band. The band is a mix of white gold and nickel.. that's how they did it once upon a time. it's so simple, but I've never seen another like it and looking at it you can just tell it's nothing they've done recently because of the quality of it

ah, diamond rings.. like so much else in the world, the quality gets worse and the pricetag gets higher.

ok folks, i think we all know that diamonds are worthless, debeers and companies like them have controlled the market for a long long time, people die to get them.....

and no, as a male i would not choose one. but as a female, most women want one. yes it's brainwashing, yes it doesn't make any sense, in fact, sapphires and emeralds are more rare....

i guess the above posts were for the people who haven't been alive in the past 10-20 years to see all of the movies and hear all of the news stories about the diamond cartels.

I insisted my engagement ring be a solitaire sapphire. I hate diamonds.

i think in europe it is the norm to have colored gemsstones.
