I will donate my organs but I don't have it registered as so. In the back of my mind I do worry that if they know ahead of time that you'll donate, less care is taken. No I have no proof of this, no I don't go around thinking crazy thoughts but it's a minor worry. My family knows that if I ever lose brain function 1) I don't want to be kept in a vegetative state and 2) I want to donate my organs after i'm gone. That said I completely disagree with automatic organ donation. No one should HAVE to do that.

Those are definitely fair points that I never considered (not knowing if they'd take less care etc.) That's definitely a lot more understandable than 'oh I don't feel like it just because I don't.'

I don't think anything is wrong with making it automatic though - if it's as easy to opt out as it is to opt in, it can still save a lot of lives for those who don't care either way and if you're highly opposed it's as simple as checking a box.. I don't see what the big deal is.

That is an unfounded concern on your part.

Err if you're in an accident and you have your id on you, donor information is right there. Anyway I said already that I have no proof, i'm still entitled to choose and I choose not to have it automatically assumed that my organs are available.

Win/Win. Choice remains, and the default is to save lives.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is with becoming a mandatory organ donor upon death

well, see, here in america, we have this thing called freedom. when you try to take away the freedom of choice people get pretty angry. mandatory organ donation is taking away a choice.

the choice is made before dying, obviously. It's the same thing as having a will, or deciding what song you want at your funeral...just because someone is dead you don't follow their wishes?

you personally don't see the point in not donating your organs, and I agree with you in that respect. I am an organ donor myself. Doesn't mean everyone has to be.

Please, oh wise one, explain to me what exactly the burdens in which I place upon society.

This should be fucking good.

I'm sure there's some well to do working man who can afford taxes and hold down a job that just got in a car accident. The fact that you are alive with organs that could save his life makes you a burden. Do the country and favor and be a donor. Skip the whole death part and just let them cut you open now.

I dono Ever, I don't think that's really fair - that's assuming the typical American assumption that we're the land of the free and no one else has as much freedom as we do, which simply isn't true

I'd say our government has us by the balls a lot more than a good number of countries.
