So, there's an example, without even having to go back to the days of Standard Oil, etc. But seriously, look up what happened back in those days. Monopolies grew organically as part of the free market process, and the government had to step in to stop them.

Yes, there are times when Congress and the government can get out of hand. See: McCarthy, Joseph.

But to automatically assume that the government is somehow inherently inimical I think is a stretch. Yes, there are many things I don't like about our current government, including the inefficiencies of many of the bureaucracies at the federal level, but I don't believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater, as it were. Yes, there are byzantine rules and regulations in government agencies, but they weren't arbitrarily created to be crazy, they evolved that way, generally at each step for what was probably a good reason.

Sure, they could use streamlining, but I don't think changing the focus to the states would change anything. States have their own crazy bureaucratic nonsenses too, which would only get dramatically worse if they were forced to start dealing with what is now being dealt with by the feds. Furthermore, some items (such as environmental issues) are so wide-ranging and can have such dramatic effects in other states than where they originate, national control is the only kind control that makes sense. As a result, a reasonably strong federal government is an absolute necessity.

We abandoned all-powerful States Rights in the 1860s because the country didn't work that way, and there was no cohesion. That's why the nation almost fragmented. (Hell, Georgia almost seceded from the Confederacy over State's Rights issues). No, trying to go back to how things were 150 years ago is stupid and pointless, and a bad idea in any case. It didn't work then, and sure as hell wouldn't work now.
