do you think that the word "humbug" is synonymous with "bullshit"

i.e. if Chuck Dickens were American, wouldn't Bob Scrooge answer "merry christmas" with "aww, bullshit" instead of "bah, humbug"

I don't. I consider 'humbug' an expression of disbelief that doesn't have the same connotations that 'bullshit' does.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Bullshit is used more when someone is trying to sell something or manipulate you, Humbug is a word I'd apply to something that seemed childish or unnecessary and more innocent in nature.

I think in this context Scrooge meant "what is this nonsense". So bullshit is probably right.

I think of it in comparison to poo-pooing something. Like, wanting nothing to do with..shrugging off or being above something, mentally. lack of spirit.

humbug has essentially the same connotation as hoax or maybe jest

so yeah, I think you could probably use bullshit interchangeably with it

I always thought it meant "smells like purple."

Merry Christmas! "aw it smells like purple."
