You might as well join the ranks of the other people who don't give a shit about this country and go right ahead and cast your vote for Obama. How proud you will be to see socialism take over America...

You are focused on foolish trivial things when there's much better reasons to dislike the man as a possible president.

Arlos wrote:So, wearing tacky costume jewelry is now a requirement in order to be patriotic? I missed that memo, apparently. Must be with the one about the changes to the TPS reports.

I have never seen one picture of, say, Eisenhower in civilian garb with a US flag lapel pin. It certainly was not part of his everyday attire and accoutrements. You going to call him unpatriotic because he didn't wear one?

Talk about an utterly retarded complete non-issue. To even attempt to conflate wearing a lapel pin when running for president to raising a flag by troops in the middle of a battle over a newly conquered major objective is ludicrous to the point of absolute absurdity. (Oh, and you do know that that picture was staged, yes?)

Last I checked, there were no material requirements involved in loving ones country and being patriotic. Faddish jewelry is not, nor should it ever be anything resembling a requirement. What's next, a requirement to wear stars & stripes underoos? Please.

The whole "controversy" is utterly contrived, completely a politically driven smear campaign, and such a complete non-issue that I cannot begin to fathom how any rational individual would perpetuate it.

What you are missing is that he was wearing one on a daily basis and then stopped, and my previous statement summarized the reason he gave for doing so.

To be sure the picture I linked was of the second flag raising that day however it was not staged. Rosenthal the photographer has always refuted the claim that it was staged, a claim that started with his affirmation to the question of it being staged, but in that instance he thought another picture was what was being asked about. In the end though:

Wow, I thought people here were smart enough not to fall for Hillary's act of desperation.

I figured it would only be the people who still support the Bush administration and have some false delusions of patriotism representing where we've been going for the last 8 years, and I'm glad to see that's still mostly true.

Thank god it won't sway people who weren't already determined to vote GOP regardless of who the candidate was.

As for the pledge thing - ok, so there's a *real* picture with him without his hand over his heart. The picture (the fact) does not say at what point the photo was taken in the pledge, whether it was right before and he just hadn't moved it there yet, and certainly DOES NOT say that he *refused* - this is where it gets ridiculous. I saw a picture of a fat Kirstie Alley in STAR magazine and it said that she's on the brink of death, should I believe it because the caption says so? cripes.

For pete's sake people, he was on a tour of Africa - it's not like he walks around in that stuff, he was likely doing it as a courtesy and respect. You're buying this from the same campaign who intentionally circulated that he was muslim just to get people frothing. It's awfully special how you hate her and don't believe or trust her one minute, but the minute she gives you reason to spout off about another dem candidate all the sudden you thank her for putting something that's utterly pointless in the public eye. I believe that's the definition of sheep.

As Mart said, quit drinking the kool-aid. Ridiculous; I may not agree with you guys on a lot of things, but I always had respect for the fact that you do your research before you go into tangents about it.. it's certainly disappointing that you buy into propaganda from, of all people, someone who's close to losing the race and lashing out as a result.

Reality is in order to get elected and make it through the primary process, one needs to appeal to the base and wings of the party. It's pretty widely understood Obama quit wearing the lapel pin once he had decided to run for President.

One can't fault a politician for playing political games, especially in anticipation of campaigning. In this case it might have worked for Obama, as he is riding the coattails of the liberals into the general election in large part based on perception.

Gyp, the only one making a big deal out of Obama in the Somali traditional garb would be Mindia. I'm not sure who else you are addressing, as Lueyen and I are solely discussing his choice of removing the 9/11 lapel pin due to political spin, which was silly, but understandable and also not a big deal.

I believe the quote goes, "Symbols are for the symbol minded."

If the man delivers a winning economy and safe country he could wear a swastika with dead baby heads on each point for all I care. You guys dislike Obama for legit reasons like lack of experience and wishful thinking on his part and thats ok. I politely disagree and respect that viewpoint. The fact that you rally behind hand over heart and a turban picture is fucking retarded. Shit, Hilary might as well drop out of the race and be McCain's running mate if that's how she's gonna play it.

Again, the only one doing that is Mindia. Most others understand he is on a goodwill trip wearing Somali traditional clothes, and there is nothing more to it than that.

Outside of Mindia I don't think any of us dislike Obama, either. He is a good man, and it certainly would be a watershed moment if he were elected. Heck, that's Mindia, though, so who cares?

I'm not a fan of a lot of things on either side. You get your choice of large corporations or trial lawyer supporters.

I think one needs to evaluate the big picture, though, and see what issues are of the utmost importance to you. His economic policies really don't worry me as much as his social ones, such as his vote against banning partial birth abortion.

I think whichever candidate gets in office, they are in for a shock and all these proposed economic and health care reforms will be washed away by a sea of baby boomer retirees who suck up entitlement money into the trillions, and the further failure of the parties to institute social security reform due to the AARP pandering will further degrade our economy.

It was general outrage and not directed at you, Lyion - sorry for making it seem like it was.

When I saw this I was just so mad at the pettiness of it. for a little while she had started running an okay campaign, being respectful and addressing valid points. For me though, what she just did is the epitome of why, if we follow stereotypes, we're not ready for a female president. It was just plain catty and outright bitchy; it reminds me of teenage schoolgirl shit. I understand that in campaigns you're going to run across some smear, but this was kind of beyond that to me; this struck me as a move similar to a young girl who just got dumped, so she spreads rumors that her bf had a small diddle and was a bad lay anyway. It's pathetic, and it just irks the shit out of me that any grown person is stupid enough to fall for it.

If you felt this was a smear, you won't like the general election.

The amount of nastiness now is miniscule compared to what we'll be seeing in September. The distortions and outright mischaracterizations will get to the point of silliness, but unfortunately that is politics.

While it is disgusting, there is a good angle to this as being President is a tough and nasty job, and it's better to have someone who has been through the political fire and is vetted.

The truth does filter in, though, such as here...

It wasn't the actual content that was delivered, it was the timing and the reasoning that reminded me of a teenager with PMS.

It's just a response to the fliers that were sent out that she went on a rampage about; the fliers had actual fact, she flipped saying it was misrepresentation, and then she has nothing political to retaliate with, nor does she have any solid defense other than "SHAME ON YOU THATS A LIE!" even though it wasn't, so she reverts back to the OMG LOOK A MUSLIM mentality. That's what bothered me really; like I said, I totally get that this sort of thing is going to happen, but in this case it was just so silly and obvious that I'm just really shocked that anyone bought into it.

Clinton most likely will go on the offensive and attack Obama in tonight's debate. If she doesn't score a decisive win, she probably will have no hope in getting the nomination.

There are people who won't vote for Hillary because she's a woman and others that will for the same reason. Obama and the rest are not exempt from this, they're going to get votes for all kinds of reasons. Some people will not want to elect someone who won't wear the American flag on his lapel, or put their hand over their heart..etc..

It's not *my* reasoning. My reasoning is the issues..but for some people these *are* issues. If there's a reason to throw your hands into the air when it comes to politics, this is it-the apathetic voters, and the uneducated voters. But if we throw up our hands, who's left?

Yah, no one likes shit slinging. The campaigning is going to be really ugly-I'm kinda mad that this is what we're facing, takes the fun out of a race. Blame stupid people, blame ignorance, blame who/whatever...but it's how it is. And it's too bad.
