He's right in that Steve Jackson and GURPS was far superior to AD&D. However, that's a silly comparison. It's like saying EQ sucks because WOW is here. Without EQ, there would be no WOW, like GURPS derived from AD&D.

Jackson's Car Wars was the bomb. It's a shame Auto Assault didn't copy it verbatim

I was really into GURPS when I was younger but there are glaring flaws in it's design that D&D doesn't have. It's not accessible at all, you really need to do a lot of research before making even the most basic character (try thumbing through the vehicles). On top of the character progression was very poor, so anyone devoting more than a few weeks into their character will realize how flawed it is. It's also very prone to abuse from power gamers, and because of the time you need to put in to understand it, you'll quickly find all the little loop holes.

All that is irrelevant since the screaming psychopath seems to ignore freewill. I played GURPS before I touched D&D and made the switch because I preferred the structure. He does make a good point about alignment, which I think has always been the weakest part of the game, but all that is very flexible and completely up to the DM. You have a lot of role-playing options in D&D, but you can't easily change the structure of GURPS unfortunately.

Gygax’ real legacy to me is the way he defined fantasy classes. He may have stolen the mold from Tolkien but I can’t even imagine what the fantasy genre would be without Fighter, Thieves, Clerics, and Wizards. Just about every role-playing game, either pen and paper of electronic, uses his framework.

That article was dumb. Who the hell actually plays D&D by the rules? We ALWAYS used the rules as a loose guideline and made our own stuff up on the way. The GM was god and what they say goes no matter what the rulebook said. We got a lump amount of XP after the adventure based on how well we played our characters, acted according to our chosen allignment and used the tools that were available to us.

Hell, not just the classes. Between the original Monster Manual, Deities and Demigods, Players Manual and it's goodies and his other books I'm forgetting because I haven't played D&D since the 80s, he created the framework for pretty much a whole generation of games, stories, and at a minimum built a wonderful repository for fans of the genre.
