i appreciate this post. honestly. i am coming close to finishing my licensing hours/internship to be a licensed therapist and i am finding that, not shockingly, you don't get alot of business education when you do 3 years of graduate work to be a therapist.
just today i had a long conversation with a therapist friend who has been through the ringer but is very wise and knowledgable now. as you can imagine therapists are not the most business savy bunch and she had plenty of stories of getting into very negative leasing/payment arrangements in sharing space with other therapists.
with a wife, 2 kids, mortgage, etc. i am realizing that working for a large organization is never going to bring close to what i could earn working independently.

so anyway, i find these posts helpful. except of course the parts where people think they are smarter/better than the other. how about just giving some testimony to your experience succesful and unsuccesful.

working for a big company has a lot of benefits too (literally and figuratively)

I get full health, drug, glasses prescriptions

massage, chiropractor, etc is also covered

my boots are paid for every other year (not that I need new boots even that often anymore)
when I work outside in the winter my jacket, gloves, toque, heavy pants etc are covered
    in the summer, rain gear

every christmas I get 1% salary to use to buy new home pc's
every january I get an extra week pay

every february I earn a floating vacation day

every 8 years I earn another week of vacation (3 more years and I'll be up to 5 weeks)

none of that would happen working for myself, at least not at this stage of my career

I also get heavily discounted telephone, internet, TV, and security services provided by the company

sorry. i didn't make myself quite clear. when i say big organization i mean non-profits. which come with very few if any perks and/or consistent raises.... that was an important detail.
