Visa went public today

Postby Reynaldo » Wed Mar 19, 2008 10:09 am

Seeing as Mastercard has tripled in the past 2 years, might be something to keep an eye on for those avid investors out there.

Shares are already up 30% just today.

I bought a couple shares for kicks. My gut tells me it'll go down, though, but we'll see. Maybe in the long run it'll prove worthwhile.

I'm not investment broker but personally I'd be wary of investing in a CC company knowing that the primary security folks have (their homes) have lost much and in some cases all the equity the home had, thus making the security have less value, and then expect folks to maintain and pay for their CC's.

Point being, if folks are going broke and losing their homes, I suspect they aren't paying their CC bills. I could see this being a bubble stock. I don't have any info as to why or when or how long they had it scheduled to go public, but I find it strange that they go public in some of the worst financial times we've had in recent history. Could it be the big shots wanted to get rich quick, get out, and leave the rest of these stock holders, holding worthless paper?

As I said tho, I have no history to base my statements on, I just find it strange that they go public "now".

Well, speaking as someone without education on the matter, my common sense tells me that our economy is cyclical. I would probably consider purchasing some of the stock now while it's fairly low with the expectation it will probably drop, but with the understanding that the economy will recover. A big company like Visa, which is pretty much a staple, I don't really foresee just dropping off the map.

But who knows - maybe that's how they're counting on people looking at it so they can pull off their get-rich-quick scheme?

The big question is why would they go public? Did they need to due to losses, in order to sustain their business? Their earnings per share is in the negative. They are already global, they're huge, I wouldn't think they'd be going public to fund further expansion.
