Someone hit my truck.

Through deductive reasoning I have determined who it was.

I was parked near the entrance to a parking lot for an apartment complex. They left white paint in my bumper.
There was only one white car in that parking lot. It was missing paint from the corresponding region of the car that would match up with the paint left on my bumper.

They did not leave a note. I have general distrust in that person because of this. Who is to say that the person would not file a report with the police and claim that I hit them somehow?

I would be looking to have them pay for the replacement tail light that they broke and nothing more: so about $150.

I got hit 25 or so years ago and considered not filing, because the damage was primarily cosmetic. But, when I asked my lawyer friends about this, I was informed that if she DID file, and i did NOT file, the accident would be deemed MY fault, regardless.

There was a dollar limit for required filing at the time. I believe it was around $500ish, and the damage to my car was roughly $500.

So - you may not legally be required to file a report if the damage is only $150. I have no idea what the rules are now, but the legal system is s l o w like turgur's.
