ELDORADO, Texas — A polygamist compound with hundreds of children was rife with sexual abuse, child welfare officials allege in court documents, with girls spiritually married to much older men as soon as they reached puberty and boys groomed to perpetuate the cycle.
We've read about some pretty sick shit here on the NT, but I believes this is up there near or right at the top. What pisses me off the most is that most of the people involved in this are going to completely get away with it due to a lack of evidence. I wouldn't be suprised if they start up another ranch and do the same shit over again in a few years.
I'm shocked that something exists on such a large scale in the US.

having the marriage age at 18 or so, is only relatively new
for hundreds, probably thousands of years, age of puberty was the age of marriage

Re: This sickens me
What the fuck does that have to do with anything? These girls were being lied to. These girls didn't have a choice in this. They were being beaten and raped. Boys were being brought up to carry on the tradition.

Yes and modern society has had a measurable effect on average age at which children start puberty and it's duration, most notably in women, and the effect is that the onset of puberty is at a younger and younger age as time goes on(to the toon of around 3 years since the 1800's), and the length of puberty also seems to be shortened. Of course (from a natural stand point) with people living longer and being able to produce longer, the urgency to start reproducing as soon as possible is also reduced.
Given this trend and the likelihood that as time goes on puberty will occur on average at a younger and younger age (keep in mind that a more recent development is cases of girls entering puberty at such a young age (6) as to be generally unhealthy) where do we draw the line between physical maturity and mental/emotional maturity when defining the age at which we consider someone an adult for the purposes of marriage or becoming a parent? Keep in mind that as I've stated previously due to modern society we've lessened the pressure to reproduce as soon as possible due to a shorter lifespan and later development of maturity (which combined means people can reproduce for much longer then in the past).
Of course in the end I can think of a lot of things that were common practice in the past, that I'm glad to be rid of in modern day, most notably in relation to the situation from the OP, wives being relegated to something akin to property or slaves, where a husband is free to abuse them at his discretion.

The early puberty thing can be directly traced to the growth hormones they give cows nowadays.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

how is this any different from being raised in a religious way?
based on your christian brainwashing...I mean upbringing, you're going to find the standards of upbringing in other cultures at odds with your own
and those other cultures will feel the same about the way you were raised

because most religions don't condone raping and polygamy and limiting peoples choices in such a way that they essentially only have the choice of following the rules because that is all they know....
i get your point but your point is a stretch when compared to this specific extreme example.
Mindia is seriously the greatest troll that has ever lived.

sure they do. I pulled out the part about rape/polygamy beacause I would agree with that, but as for the limiting of choice?
religions definitely do that, and its indoctrination begins at birth for most
