For $325k you could get a condo or a townhouse in the area of Maryland where I live but not a house. I've always wanted to move further away from the city and commute in. In the next few years that's exactly what I plan to do. Our house cost so much money and we don't even have a real backyard because we live on a golf course. Plus the homeowner's association owns your soul and you can't spit without their permission.

Congrats Gyps! A friend of mine still speaks fondly of his days in Raleigh when he was a kid, his dad is a professor. That was 35-40 years ago so I'm glad it's still a happy place to live =)

I would not hesitate to move, if I wanted to live in a different place, with or without a job at the other end. But everyone is different. Some people choose to go live where the work is. I choose to find work where I want to live. I loved temping back when I did it, lots of variety and a wonderful way to get a feel for a new area. I got some crazy jobs I didn't even know someone had to do, it was illuminating.

There is a house a couple blocks from mine, it has been for sale for a year or maybe 2 years. It started out around $285k. It is now down to $214k, is close to "pubic" transportation, is RIGHT on the railroad tracks, and has a built-in fish tank in the kitchen!

You don't have to be rich to live here, just have proper money management skills. Hell, the UPS guy has a nicer house than I do, then again, he has joint income with his wife.

whee houses . . . :D

i got mine for $112,900 with sellers paying closing costs (i actually got a check for $731 on closing day haha). it's 1,200 sq. ft. on the main floor (+ half story) and the basement is 3/4 finished (giant bathroom--bigger than the main floor bathroom--and two big nonconforming bedrooms, or i guess rec rooms depending how you look at it; they don't have egress windows).

although for a comparison, my best friend bought a house in hastings (where i'm from originally) that is pretty much the same size as mine and in better condition for $85k. frustrating!!

I bought my house for $85,500

ironically, since the US invaded Iraq and oil prices have shot up, our economy is booming and it's now worth closer to $300k

Sometimes I wish I was just born in another part of the country. But I'm not going to move away from my family and friends for a cheaper mortgage.

I talk to a lot of senior citizens that say, "your generation is getting fucked".

we are lucky to have founda house just a few blocks outside the loop for 142, it's crazy

what part of houston and how do you like it/how long have you been there? all of my extended family lives there and every time i get to go visit i'm just in love with it.... i can deal with the humidity, personally, because it makes me wanna get up and move around. feels like if you sit still you start melting in the summer QQ

the only thing i particularly disliked but could learn to live with i guess is the staggering amount of crime on the news. there were like 5 murders every day on the news... gas station shotgun shoot outs, all kinds of bullshit... but my nana lives in the SE part of houston. real close to galveston where i would love to live...

i love the greater houston area. lots more than dallas or austin

oh ya 325k here would get you a fucking nice ass house. You could probably get a 5 bedroom house on a 4 or 5 acre piece of land for that.

But then again, 15 minutes down the road in Fayetteville, I deal with a guy that paid something like 2 mill for a piece of property to build a house on that sits on the New River Gorge rim and looks down over the river. Pretty amazing view. He owns a few coal mines though, so thats chump change to him

My parents built a 3 bedroom house for 20k in 1973 in Duluth, Minnesota. They just sold it for 285k.
