We went to go see

Postby Narrock » Wed Jun 11, 2008 12:56 am

a live performance of Phantom of the Opera in downtown Sacramento tonight. 98% of the people who went to see it were dressed either in semi-formal or business attire. The rest were wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or tennis shoes. What kind of asstard would wear flip-flops to a semi-formal engagement like a Broadway musical? They should've been turned away at the door.

Anyway, the musical itself was awesome.

interesting question. i for one have always felt as though "high art" (such as opera, orchestral/symphonic works, art galleries, etc) has a chronic habit of either ritzing or pricing itself into marginality. in other words, your average american is too uncomfortable with the snootiness or the cost of experiencing such things to be able to truly appreciate them-- when suitable cheap alternatives are easily found. plenty of examples abound: $450 for a nice painting at a gallery, or $15 for a photo of a nice painting at wal*mart; blowing $33.50 and wearing your best suit for a production of Les Miserables, or $8 for the latest will ferrell pile of shit.

The biggest problem is that this phenomenon perpetuates itself, and your post is a perfect example (and be assured i'm not blaming you in particular, it's just the way it is). what do you care what people wear to these things? why should anyone care for that matter? people shouldn't go to events like that to impress others, they should go to enjoy the performance!

It's HIGH art. You are going to the Opera not a rock concert. You don't wear shorts and flip-flops to a wedding or funeral.

I didn't know what you were wearing impedes upon your ability to watch, listen, or otherwise enjoy art.

It's just another thing for people to feel snooty-like and be cunts over.

I mostly agree with Zeek. In NY, however, musicals aren't considered "high art" like operas though. It's perfectly acceptable to wear jeans to one. You shouldn't wear shorts and flip-flops though. For operas, I strictly wear suits.

It's bullshit elitism either way.

I don't care for that kind of mentality, personally.

I can figure this out, I just have think like an idiot...

The ugly girl is the elitist because she wants to dress frumpy? No that doesn't make sense. The slutty girl is the elitist because they want to dress slutty? No that doesn't make sense.

I got it! The sign is elitist because it demands that all writing be done with bolded markers! He hates all those simple one font signs and judges them for it! That's it, yea that's clever...

Have you ever been to a Broadway show in NYC? I go to 3-5 a year and unless it's opening night, the audience generally dresses casually.

i dunno how it is everywhere else, but to work at the ones back home (back when I lived there, anyway) you had to have a minimum of a C cup or you couldn't work there (had 3 friends that waitressed there right after HS). that girl's more like a heavy A. you wouldn't want to go to a place that boasts super skinny chicks and run into a 180lbs+ chick would you?

if you work at a place called hooters, you should have, well, hooters.

all i'm saying is that if it were really about the performance, attire should have zero importance.

Elitism leads to smaller audiences which leads to less financial support which leads to fewer arts performances.

Portland, Oregon is typically very tolerant of any attire. At any given event there will be people of all ages, from little kids to elderly folks. Attire runs the gamut of denim to tulle. In general Portlanders don't care what you wear to an event, only that you attend. I myself have worn everything from a ball gown to the opera, to shorts and sandals to the symphony, and everything in between. Last week I was running late and attended the ballet in jeans, although I had planned to dress up because it's fun sometimes. I fit right in, no matter what I wear, and feel perfectly comfortable.

Then again I'm old and don't care what others think of me, so if I get dirty looks I probably wouldn't notice.

10 people with 100 dollars in their pocket is a more lucrative than 100 people with 10 dollars in their pocket.

Does this riddle have something to do with the mystery of the Hooters picture? Is this like The Davinci Code where if I print the picture out and fold it a certain way it will make a picture of Jesus and give me the next clue?

Your anti-elitism is a result of not being a member of the elite. The non elite resents the elite position by criticizing on the basis of ability or attributes.

For example:
The hooters picture displays an ugly woman protesting female objectification. This is most likely a result of being an ugly woman. Because she is not a member of the elite, she resents the elite position and criticizes it for something it represents - Female Objectification. Which of course is not the real reason she resents the group. It is her inability to be a part of the group that she truly resents.

I guess it all comes down to me saying, "Hey! You're that ugly girl on the hooters pic."

The 10:100 > 100:10 reply was in reference to Ndaara and the theory of smaller markets. Wealthy people enjoy being surrounded by wealth. One of the greatest weaknesses a wealthy person has is elitism. In turn it is also one of the best ways to make wealth for yourself.

hahah man that's a good argument, only you seem to forget that I am l33t.

I'm against elitism because I find it morally reprehensible. I know principles are a silly thing to some but here we are.

I thought it was a man in there too, but now I'm not so sure. :dunno:

I probably would have turned my nose up at the people in shorts & teeshirt too, but I feel that if it's "that type" of environment, you dress a little nicer to show respect for the performers. Not that they see everyone individually, but still. I just feel it's more appropriate to dress a little nicer if you're going to some place typically considered a more formal affair; for example - a play rather than the movies, a symphony rather than a rock concert, a museum rather than a street fair. I also prefer to see people dressed a little nicer when I go out for a nicer dinner. I'm not talking about a $10,000 a plate, black tie affair, but if it's above the Longhorn Steakhouse level, then maybe put on some long pants instead of shorts & flip flops.

So that's my 2 cents. Back to studying endocrines, blood, and the heart! :cheering:
