Myvu Video Glasses

Postby Ginzburgh » Tue Sep 02, 2008 9:03 pm

Has anyone tried these?

Probably helps cardio move along a little faster but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable sporting these at the gym.

You've probably never been to a gym before but typically people don't really talk to eachother when they are doing cardio. With the exception of a couple fat yentas on side by side treadmills who walk 1 mile an hour and never break a sweat.

well that's just not true. my gym is a very friendly and inviting place where people shout encouragements to each other during cardio classes and spin classes and what-have-you. i find it's nice to have others right there with you who are suffering just the same and who are egging you on to keep going. my mom and i go to cardio classes together some mornings and we are always encouraging each other. for example: during one format of cardio class, the teacher will frequently have us go outside for a run as part of the class since the weather has been so lovely. well, neither of us is any good at running, so we'll run together and keep each other distracted from the fact that we hate running by chatting. granted, it's a short-of-breath, somewhat wheezy chat (WE ARE NOT RUNNERS hehe) but it keeps us going. actually, i've been getting better and better on these runs so now i do most of the talking and by talking i mean loudly singing showtunes to make my mom laugh to keep her mind off the fact that she is doing that which she hates most in the world (did i mention we are not runners?).

anyhoo, my point: it is not outside the realm of possibility for people to talk at the gym. just because you like to keep to yourself doesn't mean everyone else does. some people benefit from the encouragement, and some people are looking to find exercise buddies. also: shut up.

p.s. yes alex has been to a gym rofl he has a Y membership, though i believe nowadays a lot of his exercise comes from his commute since he no longer drives to school/work. just fyi.

The key word in your post is "classes". We don't have classes at my gym. Our cardio consists of rows of eliptical machines, treadmills and stationary bikes.

Although I did just join a new gym that opens on October first that does offer classes. I think I might throw in a spin class on Sunday mornings and definitely wont wear the goggles then as it is probably impossible.

meh, idk, you could probably do spin classes with goggles on. but omg you are going to be in a world of hurt, spin classes can be pretty intense.

but for the record, people at my gym chat whilst not in classes, as well--even on machines. and no, they're not the slowpoke types who "run" at 2mph.

though there are those people, too; i am frequently annoyed by this one chick who freaking talks on her cell phone whilst "exercising" on an elliptical. there's no way she's getting any cardio benefit from that.

anyway, point: just b/c people don't talk at your gym doesn't mean they don't talk anywhere, you know? it's nice to have some comraderie when you're in the thick of sweating up a storm, and the gym is a fun place to meet new friends. also, i am glad you're joining a gym with classes. i cannot imagine trying to work out regularly at a gym that only offered machines. i haaate machines. i need some chick at the front of the room screaming at me that YES WE CAN DO 8 MORE REPS hehehehe man i love my gym

I am now married, so this concern no longer applies.

There are all sorts of awesome things that were once dorkish that I no longer have to worry about, such as, vacationing in florida and staying with my grandmother to skip the cost of staying at a hotel and renting a car.

I have been looking into those too, but Oakley has a better design.

http://oakley.com/pd/2794

They are a bit high priced at 300 bucks, but they look pretty good. They're great for 5K races too where they discourage the use of iPods, etc.

why not? i can't really run either :\ my feet go numb and the sports medicine physician i went to didn't have anything to offer besides "find some other form of exercise." so i did. the cardio class runs are very short, but anything past a mile just ain't happenin'. :(

Me, I can't run because of destroying my knee playing soccer when I was young. Any sort of sustained vertical compression or pounding rapidly leaves me unable to even stand upright, much less walk, and in extreme levels of pain. Since vertical strain causes problems too, even "low impact" stuff can be very problematic as well. Riding a bike, for example, isn't much better than running, especially if I have to go uphill.

I also recently found out that the medical procedure I had done to my knee was all the rage for like 4-5 years, but now is viewed more as "OMFG, I can't believe we used to do that", because of long-term negative repercussions. Needless to say, I've noticed them, but until I'm working again and have real health insurance, there's nothing I can do besides just pop lots of painkillers just to let me walk around, much less seriously exercise.

Sucks. :(

you must live around a bunch of anti social folks

don't get me wrong, the people that are going hard aren't chatting, but everyone else is talking a bit

Maybe in your gym but the two that I am a member of are pretty much the "same" as Ginzburgh's. Very rarely do people chat while doing cardio. Every now and then someone will stand in front of the machine and have a quick convo with the person working out - then leave. Most everyone, however, has head phones on and aren't interested in chatting it up. They're not being anti-social, they're just doing what they went there to do... work out and leave.

nobody talks to anyone, ever...

The only time I see 2 people talking as they run on a treadmill or ride a bike is when they are 'workout partners' or married...

People talk to me all the freaking time when I'm pissing though... isn't that odd? No way that dude would say shit to me if we were next to each other on the treadmills (with penises NOT exposed), yet it's totally cool to talk about the economy or the weather or whatever the fuck else when I'm trying to clear my bladder in peace... Maybe I should whip out my schlong more often while I jog.
